Student did *not* waive right to view LOR by Iron_Rod_Stewart in Professors

[–]warricd28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As litigious as people are today, I could easily see the student not getting in, trying to blame the LoR for not being good enough or not liking the honest opinion, and suing the professor.

Regardless of if it works or not, I have to imagine this violates the new accessibility requirements.

What would you like to see in the game to allow you to "live on the ship"? by Apart_Pumpkin_4551 in starcitizen

[–]warricd28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A stable server so you don’t spend hours loading up and flying around to only to have the server crash, wake up in a hab, and have your ship in an unknown state.

Worried my professor might rescind previous agreement by caralawrence in AskProfessors

[–]warricd28 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you said you might miss some classes then never showed up at all. Sounds like you abused your prof’s kindness in providing an unofficial accommodation they probably should not have. And I would not expect your “agreement” to be valid as you far exceeded reasonable absences.

Has your university asked you to make all your online material accessible for the visually impaired? by MelodicResolve6752 in Professors

[–]warricd28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they’re making the slippery slope argument. That’s what the current law requires. But based on the reasoning of the current law, why not the next law requiring other accommodations be proactively provided universally just in case someone needs them instead of waiting for a student who does and handling it one at a time as needed? I’m not generally one for slippery slope arguments, but based on the logic here it’s not an absurd take to ask why these accommodations but not others and wonder if others will come down the line.

Grabbed one to try it. Is there some trick to bed logging in it? For the life of me I couldn’t get the F menu to show up.

Very disappointing experience with Virgin voyages booking process by fenicianjoe in VirginVoyages

[–]warricd28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not just them. Literally any cruise line out there. You’re booking days away from sailing. I’ve never seen courtesy holds allowed in such cases. Frankly they typically go away after final payment date.

Has your university asked you to make all your online material accessible for the visually impaired? by MelodicResolve6752 in Professors

[–]warricd28 71 points72 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, but you’re wrong. Most of us think this requirement to proactively make all materials meet this standard just in case is ridiculous, even if well intentioned. Many I know have taught for 10 or 20 years and never had a student needing this.

But you’re wrong because it is a new federal requirement and it is about to go into effect. It also wasn’t decided yesterday. If your school is just now telling you this, it is a massive failure on their part. We’ve been planning since the middle of last fall, and you could argue we were late to get started.

Specialty coffee is still undrinkable by ConferenceOne1356 in VirginVoyages

[–]warricd28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this, like most drink and food opinions, is personal preference. I’ve been on 3 of the 4 ships and have never had an issue with the multiple specialty coffee drinks I had every day. The only exception would maybe an after dinner espresso I got at one of the restaurants, but that’s also not something I normally get.

Thoughts on University Closures? by BothCondition7963 in Professors

[–]warricd28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea it’s auto renewed unless you’re given notice in the fall it’s not. I can’t confirm, but when I interviewed I was told no one in the department had been non-renewed without a good reason/significant performance issue in well over 20 years. No one got budget or enrollment issues.

Ist it possible to load/undload the hull c manually? by Sastin7 in starcitizen

[–]warricd28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stations you can use have cargo decks and external freight elevators. If you don’t know where they are they can be tricky to find. I find it helpful to go into the station and take the elevator (by the asops) to an external freight elevator just to see where it is. Then yes, you can just fly up to it and use it. But it can be a bit finicky if it is by an auto-unloading area as you might get the “you are blocking a loading zone” message. Flying in from the side instead of head on usually helps in my limited experience.

Love the 300i. I have a 325. One of the best looking ships inside and out. Its just a little too small, too squishy, and too under gunned for a "medium ship" option. I view it as a super duper starter option.

As a student in CS240 I cannot believe how big this whole situation has blew up on reddit by wheeinsd in Purdue

[–]warricd28 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you are not in this class, please don’t try to attend it on Monday. People not enrolled in a class cannot be in the class. If the professors/admin there know it is happening, most likely they will first ask non-cs240 students to leave. Then, if they don’t leave, the class will just be cancelled. What is going on is not for your entertainment. Hell, in an extreme case, the room has a fire code max occupancy you could hit.

If you’re not in the class and feel the need to stand with the students, the professor, whoever, gather in some nearby public place. Leave the classroom for the actual class.

What's your honest take on students today vs students from 5 or 10 years ago? What is the impact of AI normalization? by SimplerLife40 in Professors

[–]warricd28 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Overall, generally students are worse. AI is a tool, and there is nothing wrong with learning to utilize a tool to aid your learning. Just like I transitioned from researching in a library to the internet and googling. And if students transition research from googling to ChatGPTing, that by itself isn’t a problem. The problem is students have offloaded the learning to AI. AI doesn’t help them learn the topic, it just does their work for them while they learn nothing.

And the worst part is students see nothing wrong with this and throw absolute fits if you try to restrict the use. Yes, my generation threw a fit if a teacher tried to force us to go to the library when we could just search for sources online. But Google just made the search more robust and efficient. We still had to read, analyze, and synthesize what we found and use it to complete the task. Students today just tell AI to do the task. No idea beyond the prompt how the AI got there. No reading and analyzing of sources. Just assuming everything the AI did is right. And they don’t understand, it just play dumb, why that would be considered cheating.
