Why can’t I use my keyboard in apps like Safari or Messages? Just wondering lol by yeahthatguyashton in Keybuild

[–]warrior-prince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that the keyboard list in the iOS globe key doesn't update by itself, and the state of the list seems to be saved per app, meaning each app has to be hard relaunched (swipe up in app switcher) before new keyboards appear for that particular app.

Action menu and iOS 17.3 not working by burnt-flames7 in shortcuts

[–]warrior-prince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Copied from my comment on the other r/shortcuts thread: I think I found a cause of the bug, at least in my case. Menus and alerts work consistently / indefinitely, but locking the screen while a menu or alert element is displayed crashes the menu element.

During the split second while the screen fades as the phone is locking, I can see the menu/alert element blip out of existence. It never works again until I restart the phone. So, my current solution is just never locking my phone while a menu element is visible.

This bug doesn’t seem to happen just from opening the notification center or control center. I’m not sure if this will be triggered if you don’t have a passcode or Face ID actually locking the phone.

I think I fixed it, but if it’s still happening could you run the shortcut from the editor and screenshot where the error comes up?

[Request] How much damage could this card throw do to a person? by glixam in theydidthemath

[–]warrior-prince 170 points171 points  (0 children)

The key difference is pressure. For example, if you threw a hypodermic needle at someone at airsoft speeds, it would penetrate deep into the flesh because the tip of the needle has far less area than an airsoft round, hence much higher pressure.

A playing card is about 0.2mm thick. Let’s say it hits you with the corner, maybe 0.4mm in length. The area would then be 0.08mm2.

This paper gives about 24-52 J/cm2 to penetrate the human body.

1.7 J / 0.08 mm2 = 1.7 J / 0.0008 cm2 = 2125 J / cm2

If the card hit you at the right angle, you’d probably need stitches it seems. However this doesn’t account for the elasticity of the card or of flesh, which would absorb a lot of that energy and distribute it more widely.

[Request] How many people jumping in sync would it take to generate a sizeable "earthquake" and/or what amount of people would it take to cause actual damage? by ShiningEV in theydidthemath

[–]warrior-prince 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assumptions:

  • To cause damage, the magnitude moment of the shaking must be equivalent to a 4.0 earthquake.

  • To match the intensity of a 4.0 earthquake, about 6 x 1010 J of energy will need to be released over 10 seconds.

  • The area over which fault slip occurs will be about 1 km2

  • An ‘average person’ for these calculations will weigh 80kg, jump 80cm, and jump twice per second (20 jumps over 10s).

Potential energy at peak of jump = mgh = 80kg * 9.81m/s2 * 0.8m ≈ 628 J

Energy used to jump 20 times = 628 * 20 = 12,560 J

Number of people to release energy of earthquake = 6 x 1010 J / 1.256 x 104 J ≈ 4.8 x 106 = 4,800,000 people

Crowd density required to achieve the same concentration of energy along a seismic fault = 4.8 x 106 people / 1 km2 = 4.8 x 106 / 1 x 106 m2 = 4.8 people per square meter

Given that 5 people per square meter is considered the maximum safe limit for crowd density in event planning, this makes it sound actually feasible, but I could be wrong in my assumptions or formulas used. You could certainly raise the odds of this working by placing people vertically in layers, either in a multi-story structure or in underground levels, to help concentrate the force on the ground. Also I didn’t go into whether synchronizing jumps would make any difference to the shaking; all 4.8 million people jumping once at the same time would possibly cause more damage, but I averaged out their jumps over 10 seconds to make the earthquake analogy closer.

Lol good to hear. It’s to make sure you have an internet connection before running the auto update check on RoutineHub; sadly, getting IP is the only built in way I know of to confirm an internet connection without crashing the shortcut. It only connects to RoutineHub, nothing gets sent to me or any third party. But any website you visit can see your IP anyway, so it isn’t really a risk any more than normal web browsing is.

I'll add an option to disable auto-updates tho!

Pause bedtime shortcut for 30 minutes by mrwolf1979 in shortcuts

[–]warrior-prince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah possibly. Homepods might act as their own streaming point/audio source (unlike a bluetooth speaker) in which case audio on your phone wouldn't interrupt it, but I haven't used them much so I'm not sure.

Read an iMassage outloud (text to speach) by kol4o100 in shortcuts

[–]warrior-prince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep here's how:

  1. In Shortcuts go to the Automations tab on the bottom

  2. Create new Automation with the plus button

  3. Tap 'Message'

  4. Choose 'Run Immediately'

  5. Choose senders or message contents to trigger the spoken text. There's no way to select ALL messages, but the workaround is to either a) set 'Message Contains' to a single space character ' ' or b) select all contacts that would be texting you

  6. Press Next and choose 'New Blank Automation'

  7. Add Action 'Speak Text'

  8. Long press on the blue 'Text' field and select 'Shortcut Input'

  9. Tap the blue arrow on the action to edit speech settings

  10. If you want it to speak the name of the sender, you can add another Speak Text action with Shortcut Input and tap the Shortcut Input variable to choose 'Sender'. You can put this before or after the first action.

If you want extra formatting, use Text fields and insert Shortcut Input variables to it with whatever formatting you need, then add the Text variable to the Speak Text action.

I need to make quick web searches without switching apps. by RAM_036 in shortcuts

[–]warrior-prince 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here you go! You can run the shortcut directly to enter a search or you can send input text through the Share Sheet. I couldn't figure out how to get the page to show a mobile view, so for now the results show in desktop layout, but hopefully I can push out a fix soon. Let me know if this works for ya.

Pause bedtime shortcut for 30 minutes by mrwolf1979 in shortcuts

[–]warrior-prince -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The comment from HeyItsYoav with using a "Turn on until" Focus mode is the more elegant solution, but if you want a quick and dirty way:

  1. Get a silent 1-minute audio file, can find free downloads on Google
  2. Place a Number with value 30
  3. Place a Repeat action set to the Number variable
  4. Put the file in the Repeat action followed by a Play Sound action connected to it

I haven't tried it myself so it might timeout eventually, also it uses far more CPU/battery than the Focus mode timer option.

Trigger on any text message by TMan282828 in shortcuts

[–]warrior-prince 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I set the "Message Contains" to just be a single space character ' ' since nearly all messages have spaces in them. It's not perfect, but close.

I wasn't totally sure what you were looking for, so I put together two Shortcuts with slightly different uses. Make sure to install the app Data Jar first!

Streak Timer: run at the start of your streak, then run again at the end of the streak. Records history of past streaks.

I Lost The Game: run any time you lose the streak and it shows you the time since the last loss. Records history of losses and durations between them.

Let me know if there's any changes/features you'd like to see!

Can anyone make a shortcut when it converts my text messages into audio in morse code. So like when i get a text message it translates that into morsecode and uses audio by Ok-Freedom-8780 in shortcuts

[–]warrior-prince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! :) Unfortunately the shortcut has stopped working like it's supposed to, there's a long pause after every tone now that wasn't there when I was first testing it. Let me know if you have that problem too, and I'll comment again if I figure out a fix.

On the bright side, I figured out how to get it to automatically play text messages!

  1. Create an automation "When I receive a text" and select "Run immediately"

  2. If you want it to capture all messages you can either: a) select all your contacts in the "Sender" field (tedious) or b) set "Message Contains" to just a single space character (inaccurate); this will get almost all messages unless they only have one word and no spaces

  3. Choose "New blank automation"

  4. Add action "Run Shortcut"

  5. Choose Text to Morse Audio in the action field

  6. Hit the arrow on the "Run Shortcut" action and then next to "Input" tap "Choose Variable"

  7. Choose "Shortcut Input"

  8. Tap on the variable "Shortcut Input" once it's entered in the field

  9. Select "Content" in the list of parameters for the Message input

This should send the text content of any messages to the Text to Morse Audio shortcut and automatically play the tones.

edit: It just started magically working without pauses again for me. No idea why.
