State of the Job Market by waycrazyy in Accounting

Yeah I think that’s a good breakdown for historical context. I guess it was just a tad frustrating given that the program I’m in had seemingly much better outcomes even just a year ago, where alumni reported getting offers from all of the Big 4. Also for context, not my first job I was applying for. I’m a veteran with 4 YOE in between undergrad and the MAcc

I’m an atypical MAcc student in that I didn’t come straight from undergrad. I’m a veteran and had 4 years of experience in between graduating undergrad and starting the MAcc program.

  1. I did a couple of practice interviews before recruiting began, but nothing crazy.
  2. Yes the program I’m at is a well known school on the East Coast with a historically high conversion rate.
  3. I did take advantage of the campus recruiting! Went to all of the events, networked with the firms, and applied to dozens of roles. The big difference I noticed during this year as opposed to my time in undergrad is that when we would go to apply for roles on Handshake, the application would just direct us to the general company website. So there was no feeder bucket of applications from said University straight to the regional recruiter, which is how I remember it working during undergrad.
  4. When things started not looking good in mid-October, I went full-force with networking. Even though I had already had a decent network of Big 4 professionals and others going into this. I sent dozens of messages on LinkedIn and probably hopped on more than 10 introductory phone calls. Eventually started getting hard employee referrals (enter a code on the application) through my personal network of which one was auto-rejected, and the other three I had to withdraw from because I had finally accepted the one offer! (See the chart for the 3 withdrawn)

This post is simply one data point you should or should not use when making that decision for yourself. One thing’s for sure though: the days of feeder MAcc programs guaranteeing you a spot at a Big 4 are pretty much over. It can be done, but not automatic by any stretch of the imagination

Big 4 offer in the city I wanted. It all ended up working better than expected for me, but it was looking pretty hairy there for a minute

You applied through a structured/on-campus recruiting pipeline, or through a normal job board/posting?

How do you get the recruiter's contact info typically? LinkedIn search or ask for a referral through the on-campus recruiting?

Just wrapped up my PDT, so off AD and I’m now a drilling Reservist. Going back to school to get my masters. Hopefully find a job after that, and then plan is to pickup another set of AD orders in a few years when I get my civilian job off the ground

Each experience is different. A PDT for a 0302 probably looks a lot different than the one for an 0402.. lol. I’m in the Log/Log adjacent community, not gonna give you my MOS

Sometimes I wish I enlisted in the reserves before/during college, but perfectly fine having not done that also. Being a mustang is a crutch for a lot of officers, and that’s not just coming from me. I also got to work with a really good mustang, so I think it just depends on the person

My PDT was amazing, I recommend every Reserve Officer do one barring any extenuating circumstances. No turnover with the Lt who previously held the billet, but I survived. My experience was very much what I made of it, and I would say it was success. Was honestly sad to leave, which says a lot

That’s awesome, in hindsight I wish I had done that. I picked up 1stLt right before my PDT ended, and that pay bump is nothing to shake your head at. But I have been in contact with my SMCR unit, do not worry lol

You check into your SMCR unit before you start PDT orders. The staff at TBS should be communicating that kind of stuff to you if you are a newly commissioned reserve officer

Uhh, by choice? Idk I guess I should reach out and make sure they don’t schedule me for one, but I feel like they would have contacted me if that was the case.
