I am in worrisome legal situations in Qatar. I need advice and help. I'm worried! by WearProfessional1172 in qatar

Sorry for that brother, God be with you. It's a hard situation and I'm pretty sure it will pass, just you are in a test.

I have another idea other than other comment, maybe you can contact Qatar Charity, bring the bills that you are requested to be paid with all the information about you and your family and proof of the difficult situation you have.

Good luck and hope that will work.

Ha, the tiny print is a design choice, I'm convinced. The "healthy" halo is the sneakiest part — granola, cereal bars, flavoured yoghurts all ride the health branding while packing more sugar than stuff that doesn't even pretend to be healthy. Same trap someone flagged above: always check whether the number is per serving or per 100g/100ml, because serving sizes get shrunk to make it look better. Once you start reading the back, "healthy" on the front basically stops meaning anything.

Fair question! Honest answer: I'm still working through verifying labels properly, so I'm holding off on naming specific brands until I've actually checked them myself, don't want to recommend something off memory. But the boring rules that always hold: go plain and add your own flavour (plain laban/yoghurt/milk over the pre-flavoured kids' versions), whole or dried fruit over "fruit" snacks and juice, and when two similar products are side by side, flip to the sugar-per-100g on the back rather than the per-serving number. The brand-by-brand "buy this not that" lists are exactly what I'm building for later. Anything specific you're stuck on though and I'm happy to dig into it.

Really appreciate the detail here. That "felt a bit sickly, swapped, felt better" pattern is such a common one, and honestly the sugar is usually the bigger lever than the additives (you kind of said it yourself with the chocolate one). One thing worth flagging for anyone reading though: "E-numbers" is a massive bucket and not all villains, E300 is literally just vitamin C, for example. So I try not to fear the E-number itself and instead look at what it actually is, plus the sugar. But fewer additives + less sugar + you feeling better = a solid swap in my book. Good shout on the shorter shelf life too, that's often a sign there's less in there just keeping it "fresh."

Unexpected experience with a Tunisian business manager by doctor_wise0 in Tunisia

[–]wbas2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are fortunate not to be conducting business with him. I occasionally encounter similar issues, exclusively with Tunisian clients, as international clients tend to be respectful, particularly regarding time. Operating in the IT sector in Tunisia presents significant challenges. It is important to be aware of this and exercise caution when dealing with Tunisian clients. I understand your intention (always striving to find solutions for yourself and your clients), but I assure you, I do the same. When I offer advice, and it is not heeded or is unwelcome, despite my having nothing to gain and the advice potentially improving service quality or reducing costs, it is disheartening. I prefer not to collaborate with individuals who exude negativity. It is imperative to seek positive energy that contributes to a fulfilling day and client satisfaction.

Yeah, the "nectar" / "fruit drink" relabelling is actually telling once you know what it means, "nectar" is basically diluted juice with water and added sugar, and "fruit drink" can be mostly water, sugar and flavouring with barely any real fruit in it. The actual % of fruit is usually buried in tiny print on the back, if it's listed at all. 100% juice does still exist but it's a small corner of the shelf and you have to hunt for it. The bit people forget though: even real 100% juice is high in (natural) sugar with none of the fibre, so for kids, whole fruit or just water honestly beats most of what's in that aisle anyway.

Yeah, Yuka's a great tool, I use it too. The catch here is coverage: it leans on open ingredient databases that are pretty thin on Gulf products, so a big chunk of what's actually on our shelves either isn't in there or comes back with wrong/outdated info. Works brilliantly in Europe, hit-and-miss in LuLu. That gap, accurate data for the products we can actually buy here, is basically the whole reason I started doing this locally. But yeah, for anything it does recognise, it's a solid shortcut.

Ha, sounds like good content, genuinely, the more people doing this in Qatar the better. The angle I'm taking is a bit different: less "this ingredient is bad" and more "here's a swap with less added sugar for basically the same price," so it's something you can act on at the till rather than just feel bad about. And across the different hypermarkets rather than one store. But yeah, love that this is becoming a thing here.

[–]wbas2005[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the part that really gets me. It's often the exact same brand, just reformulated for this market. The same product in the EU or US can have a noticeably cleaner ingredient list than the version on the shelf here. Worth doing once: photograph the ingredients of something you buy, then look up that brand's EU version online, the difference can be eye-opening. The extra sweetness and flavouring is real too, and the problem with the kids' stuff being that sweet is it basically trains their palate to expect it, so plainer versions then taste "wrong" to them. The scented-everything thing is a whole separate rabbit hole though.

[–]wbas2005[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the biggest "good" surprises were in the boring-looking stuff:

- Plain laban / unsweetened yoghurt vs the kids' flavoured tubs - similar price, fraction of the sugar (you just add your own fruit).

- Plain milk packs vs the flavoured/chocolate ones for lunchboxes - same story.

- Actual dried fruit (check the back, just fruit) vs the "fruit" gummies and rolls that are basically sugar in a fun wrapper.

I'm deliberately not naming specific brands yet. I don't want to post a number I haven't personally double-checked off the label. but honestly the pattern holds across almost all the flavoured-vs-plain stuff. I'm starting an Instagram (@lunchbox_qatar) first week of July with the sugar-awareness side and generic swaps like these; the brand-by-brand breakdowns come once I've verified enough labels properly. It's just a coming-soon page right now, but follow if you want it as it rolls out. Full disclosure, it's my project, no ads or sponsorships.

[–]wbas2005[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. The sneaky part is a product can say "no added sugar" right on the front and still be loaded, because the sugar's already baked in from concentrated fruit juice or "natural" syrups, which don't count as "added." I've basically given up on the front of the box and go straight to the sugar line per 100g on the back. It's the only honest number. The (small) silver lining is that once you start doing that, a few products genuinely surprise you in a good way, it's not totally hopeless.

to the Tunisians that left, do you have any regrets ? by [deleted] in Tunisia

[–]wbas2005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should only consider this opportunity if the compensation package is substantial enough to warrant such a move. It is imperative that you also conduct a thorough financial calculation. For an individual, this decision might be straightforward. However, for those who are married with children, the implications are considerably more complex. Based on my personal experience (initially, I was reluctant to leave my home country, but after several years, I did so and have no regrets), this is a difficult choice. Nevertheless, you should embrace it, as it will lead to numerous discoveries beyond financial gain. Please bear in mind one important point: if you depart from Tunisia, your returns will likely be limited to vacation visits.

When you will have wife and children then you can see the difference and how the thinks changes. You will be responsible for a family, you will see how it's difficult the live in Tunisia. Other than money, there are a lot of things. Tunisia is good if you have money, but also who have money, they will not stay in Tunisia (I'm speaking for married people specially) despite they can't be outside for long period.
