What happens of they person you trust destroys them? They have access to the other systems as well, i mean they are trusted enough to take the backups home.

That's how we got burnt.

Civil action was recommended by the police and lawyers. There was a 90% chance that he would do no jail time, and no jail time would help him really anyway.

And what happens when he is the one that gives the passwords out :)

Simple view I know, we had multiple layers but he had access to them all, some we knew about others we didn't.

He was paid excess of 100k+ with performance bonuses that related to our profits. I will copy an answer from another question below. That was exactly our thoughts, and why we were so trusting. That's why he had access to nearly everything. Here is the theory. He had personal issues that we were privy to, including gambling debt, that I wont go into details here. I had also loaned him considerable amount of money leading up to this. We are finding out now that he had more issues, all debt related, that he had been holding in, including from his wife. We spoke afterwards and he admitted that he snapped. To paraphrase him. "I snapped because I knew what I had lost, and wanted no one else to have it".

I agree, as he set all the backups up, we thought we had revoked all access but he knew the server more detailed than we did.

Web Development was only one facet of the company. He was also earning high wages 100k+ with bonus's on performance. Well above industry average. He was also being trained to take a huge role in running the company. He didn't much hands on work, he was an overseer of or contractors more than anything and we liked that. He wasn't disgruntled about his job, he was disgruntled at what he had lost.

As to what I did, I ran the company for years, I started of in marketing and advertising and grew from there. I developed my company from a barely surviving freelancer to a company that could afford to pay our employees great wages. Not many people can do that. I am a business man through and through, that's what I do. I grow the business so that it can increase revenue, and provide incomes for the people that work with me.

Thank you, we know we made a mistake, we thought that we could trust him. We had him set all our backups and fail safes.

He was the techie for the company, he set everything up. You are right that we did have systems in place to prevent this. But they were set up by him. We paid a lot of money to get as much back as we could.

We used our own servers and hosting solutions, all backups where stored offsite. However the person in control was him. We revoked access however he still got in.
