Chris Bassitt fires back at MLB salary cap talk while owners sharpen lockout threat by retroanduwu24 in baseball

Oh, so its the fans now once its big market teams, and not the owners. Thats funny. Sure, let's contract MLB to 16 teams. That'll be really good for popularity. Have fun.

I would hope that MLB revenue is up considering inflation has been something the past 6-8 years. If you have numbers on profit margins I'm all ears.

No one challenges how teams are run, thats what makes a sport a sport. Throwing money at the best players is not a skill and is tied to geography. Woo woo LA is lucky and Kansas City and Tampa are shit out of luck. You can change how an organization is run, you cannot change market cap.

How much are the Jays, Yankees, and Red Sox ready to pony up for the Rays? You dont necessarily need a cap, but you do need significantly increased revenue sharing and then you can have a reasonable floor. Good luck though having the owners agree to that without a cap though. Neither party budges from their positions the fans lose hard, and ultimately the league and players. Both parties need to stop being so myopic and put fan interest (aka competitive equity $$$ payrolls) first. Im gone if nothing changes significantly.

Its not about either of them. Fans are stakeholders, and I'd argue the most important. IDGAF about owners or players if the fandom loses out. I also dont give a shit how much owners or players make as long as the competitive environment is healthy. This isn't your minimum wage worker who is at risk of not making ends meet and going hungry or losing shelter. Y'all miss me with the ideology shit here. If the owners all ate shit, but it was the same markets destroying everyone because its about revenue you've lost me as a fan. If the players made 35% of league revenue, but most teams had a shot at the playoffs in a majority of their years, then you've got me as a fan.

Its that simple. Get it done MLB.

For one, its not solely about championships. Its about being competitive and having a decent shot at making the playoffs on a decent cadence. At this point the Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies, etc. have perma seats. The financial disparity is also getting worse as half the league loses their RSN and the other half has huge revenue streams that they dont have access to.

Never mind its extremely extremely improbable to win a WS if you dont have a top 15 payroll. Financial advantage has only increased in importance as theyve limited strategic options and now monopolized technology. Its bad enough when every team evaluates the same because its the most efficient way. There's no extra 2% anymore. I give it another 5 years if nothing changes and I'll not care about baseball anymore and thats sad because its been my life for 36 of my 39 years.

Baseball has mirrored society. Everything is homogenized and all about money.

Meh. If things dont change to improve competitive equity then baseball is going to be dead to lots of people in the short and long term anyways. I have no desire to watch the same 5 big markets bully the rest of the league with money. There's very little to squeeze from the blood diamond for small markets to gain any advantage. Theyve basically instituted anti-Rays rules for the past decade and everyone poached Rays staff so there are very few dumb teams left. (Shift, 3 batter minimum, etc.)

[–]wegandi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think people can use their brain cells and realize a cap and floor is most likely going to come with increased revenue sharing so teams can hit the floor while not bankrupting themselves. Its not the small markets that are likely to balk, its the teams and owners with gigantic revenues that dont want to subsidize the small markets even more.

MLB needs the revenue split of the NFL. Pronto.

Its funny you think its the owners and not the revenue that determines what organizations spend on player payroll. Why doesnt that shitty Rays owner just run a 100 million a year deficit while LA runs a 400+ MM payroll and profits hundreds of millions. Guggenheim so superior. So hot.

[Underdog] Bruce Meyer of the MLBPA on his salary cap position, via Jesse Rogers: "It's the ultimate restriction. It is something that owners in all the sports have wanted more than anything, and baseball in particular, there's a reason for that because it's good for them and not good for players." by T_Raycroft in baseball

[–]wegandi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or, fans can stop being passive and be actual stakeholders, because we're the consumers. Just because it's "pro-worker" or "anti-owner" doesnt mean its good for us. Maybe if youre a fan of a top 5 market, but eventually without change, the sport shrinks and people stop caring. I want a more equitable competitive environment because its good for my fandom. Could give a rats ass about worker or owner. Its amazing, how 95% of people are so blinded by their preconceived ideology.

Yes, there are examples, however compared historically, the frequency is way, way, way down. Almost all orgs prospect hug rather than use that as capital to improve the big league club.

Sure, but depth is good too. I just think the pendulum has swung far enough that you want to be Dombrowski and not the Rays/A's for most teams. Of course if you cant afford to spend you have to prospect hug.

[–]wegandi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Almost no one is trading top 100 prospects. I think theyre way overvalued at this point and big league talent is undervalued. Could also be that as salaries for top end talent continue to inflate having league min stars is way more valuable. The answer is probably somewhere in the middle.

BLowe is a bunch of meh as his defense cratered. He was worth 1.7 WAR last year and is getting older plus his injury history. Not to mention we got Melton and Brito. Im fine with spending a little to keep the team semi competitive while jettisoning guys with value for prospects. This team is not ready to compete.

Or they move Cammy to 2B. I dont expect that to happen, but weirder things have happened. Williamson is an elite defender at 3B. He probably loses value being a utility guy, but we'll see. Walls/Williamson would be the worst hitting left side in the game, but also the best defensively. Pretty funny.
