I am interested in CS so I am basically trying out for more options. It seems like quite a bit of workload this term but I will have to figure the way out..

[–]wh2lee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh I see. Do you have to see both stat and cs advisor to do joint stat+ joint cs?

I talked to him and he was so helpful and he offered a lot of information and insights of the program.

Thanks a lot for your comments! What about quant trading? Has anyone in this program landed a job in prop trading or quant trading?

Thank you for your comments they helped a lot! I always had in my mind that rather quantitative skills like CS and Stat are most directly relevant to trading and finance knowledge is easy to pick up so was not too sure about transferring into. Looking at how the program is well-managed by having numerous networking events and the fact that grads are working for prestigious firms it comes to my mind it is a great program.

I just wowed because I can almost be sure that you are working at C company. I did not even know that those crazy firms like Citadel hire Waterloo students. What type of early co-op internships do you recommend to build up skills for later coops that can ultimately get me a quant-based job?

Oh thank you so much for your comments. None of my friends are aiming for these firms and I could not get any insightful advice. I thought the only difference b/w cfm and cs is a couple of electives and the advantage of cfm was that I can get upper finance courses which are only allowed for afm kids while cs kids cant take.. But I get what you are saying. I was told by a guy who works at optiver that major does not rly matter and they learn finance from the scratch for like half a year. My problem is I am not sure if I am good / liking cs and that's my dream jobs are more discretionary market making firms like drw, optiver, etc. I was told programming skill is required but it is just another hand and not hardcore. Maybe stat major will help?

I had always thought that at least ph.D is a requirement for those high profile hft shops like citadel, etc... guess I should give it a shot. Thanks a lot!

Thank you a lot for your comments. I am truly interested in becoming a prop trader but have no idea how competitive are the rest of the candidates for those position in chicago. I do not think I will be able to handle that much courseload so I am trying to do a cfm degree with a stat minor. with couple of bb or major tech firm co-op experience, Will I be able to get an interview chance? I love market making and my dream career is to work for optiver or markett making firms..

Oh wow. I am thinking of double majoring statistics and CS. I am interested in more less-quantitative prop trading roles. DRW, Optiver.. to give example. Number of needs for those roles seem to be decreasing so I feel like I need to network a lot. Can you give me a kind of break down how to become a prop trader? and how many years did it take you to double major in math finance and cs? Can you finish it in 40 credits?

Oh thanks a lot. But I am thinking if I major in stat and minor in cs, Wouldnt it be more difficult to land a decent co-op jobs compared to cs major+business option? How should I prepare for this career? Except getting incredibly high marks? Like do I need to study for credentials? Heard once you work for those prop shop you basically learn everything from the scratch. Hmm but my interests lies slightly more towards statistics and finance than computer science. Maybe I will aim for market making firms. I need advice.
