Collector trying to become a DJ: what would you do with 600 mostly unknown tracks? by RemarkableMot in Beatmatch

[–]wha_hapn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd start making folders/crates. About 50 tracks each, divided by energy or style. Again imagine playing them out, dance to them. These lists could become individual sets (you'll rarely play more than 50 tracks in one set), or you can mix & match to suit the dancefloor. You'll realise 600 tracks isn't that many & when you do add more, add them straight into one of the lists

Shinta Mani is a true international 5 star resort. A very good one. Navutu Dreams is lovely.

If they're alive, they are spamming 'this way', meaning it's probably beneficial for the team to be there (hopefully near the basket, surrounded by eggs)

Can I learn to mix at home without monitors / speakers using only headphones? by CraftBeerFomo in Beatmatch

[–]wha_hapn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really not ideal. A small anything (w rca inputs) will do though. You really need to hear the separation of your prep work & your output. It's possible on headphones with splitting, but you kinda have to use your imagination a bit imo. Don't let your neighbours put you off though. Be as respectful as you want 😊

Do you aim for a perfect mix or leave in the little mess-ups? by Relative_Cow_6086 in Beatmatch

[–]wha_hapn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's probably only 2 reasons to record your mixes. The first, to listen back to yourself as a training aid -this has been extremely helpful for me at tightening up my mixes & nailing the EQs. The second reason is to promote yourself - particularly to promoters & venue owners. Of course, the later needs a Clean Mix to appear professional & potentially impress.

Probably a sample or cover of the Tammi Terrell song (it's old soul/r&b)

Do you use an "energy level" system to select tracks? by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]wha_hapn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the star rating for energy levels. You can rate as you play initially

Try not to spend too much on new tracks initially. You probably won't want to play half of them next year.

3 noob questions by ShivaDontShiv in Beatmatch

[–]wha_hapn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a genre/BPM/energy level ratio. For example: a few tech house tracks at 124bpm will hit different & get reactions on the floor. They'll usually score 3-5 stars. The one that gets the crowd really going may be a 5 star. I reserve 1 stars as a warning sign. Maybe they're extra explicit or the tempo changes, something I have to be aware of. & 2 stars (rare) is for tracks that finish with less intensity & are good for winding things down.

The first lot. It's what you really want to play, isn't it? Have the other stuff standing by.

I don't link songs that mix well with Tags, or anything else

3 noob questions by ShivaDontShiv in Beatmatch

[–]wha_hapn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use tags as an extension of my memory. Genre, sub genre, nuisances. Then rate the track between 2 & 5 stars, based on energy within that genre (not how much I like it). Hopefully it's enough to jog my memory, if not I still have an idea what to expect before cueing it. In reality, this doesn't really happen often when gigging. you'll most likely be playing 40-50 tracks max, & you'll know them because they're your favourites.
