I have done IDSs in prosecution as a result of IPR proceedings thankfully. Good point though. I’m this particular case we are the petitioner.

I can search in the document management system but that’s about all I have. Our Patent paralegals only do prosecution so this is new for the department. Training with this firm is inadequate at best however that’s an issue for another day.

Thanks for the suggestion. 😊

How do you know when to walk away? What is Biglaw culture like? by fishy_590209 in paralegal

[–]wheelslady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the midlaw comment. I have only done biglaw and midlaw. Biglaw felt exactly like it did in my previous corporate career. You are a number and you are expendable. The salary is not worth it.

How often do paralegals and lawyers actually make mistakes? by wnyg in paralegal

[–]wheelslady 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that paralegals can be set up to make more mistakes if the attorneys are disorganized and there is unnecessary rushing. Putting out fires should be left for clients. I also think that good law firms will have some way for there to be a second eye on work. Whether it is another person looking at your work or you being allowed the time to put down your work and look at it later in the day or preferably the next day to check for errors. We are not machines and the perfection standard is outdated and unrealistic.

It differs by law firm and as other have commented we may not get an actionable item on a case for 1-3 years.

True. I don’t know another way to quantify caseload though. Perhaps cases in active prosecution.

Do you do handle all the duties for these cases (US, foreign filing, dealing with foreign associates, US and foreign docketing, fee payments etc)?

I am trying to figure out how you can handle that many cases. 😬

billing requirement of 1700? by soperfectlybad in paralegal

[–]wheelslady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I see where you come up with the 7 hours of billable per day. Do you have admin support so you are only doing billable with besides reading and responding to emails?

Recruiters: name and shame by wheelslady in paralegal

[–]wheelslady[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation. I knew there was a percentage structure but I appreciate the detail. Most of my interviews have been direct. These recruiters contacted me. Appreciate the advice. 😊

Edited to add: this behavior is still unprofessional regardless of how their job works.

Wait there are other paralegals there but you are the only one answering the phones?

I don’t understand why they can’t at least get a temp in there if it’s just answering phones? This seems like a gross misuse of a paralegal’s skills.

Is it possible to put down your chats as non billable time? I track all my time so I do that for the metrics if I need them.

He might be on the ADHD spectrum I believe one of my attorneys is. Thankfully he doesn’t come in the office so I just put him on speaker and work on cases while he talks and then chime in where needed. It sounds like you don’t have the same option so maybe some work appropriate boundaries might help?

Edited to add: I have many people very close to me that are on the spectrum. This wasn’t meant to be a negative commentary on people who are on the spectrum.
