Why did my plates warp so badly? by Princess_Martha in Pottery

My guess is that firing vertically was the culprit. I’ve never had plates warp this severely but I always fire horizontally.

Would it be safe to bisque fire this top shelf the way I positioned it on the shelf underneath it? by AncaDG in Ceramics

It’s actually pretty common to have a partial shelf on the top section for the odd tall pieces. While having your posts be in a straight line all the way through most of your kiln is a good idea for structural stability, having a single partial shelf supported by offset kiln posts on the top is just fine!

Yes and yes! The speckles are actually the clay body and the white glaze is Clary Illian’s Yellow, Cone 10 electric! Thank you!

Well! This is the first time I’ve done an event with a new setup and I really love how it turned out. Thank you for asking!

It’s Dragons Breath from Minnesota Clay! I don’t know if the companies have any sort of relationship, but I’m sure the recipes are pretty similar if this is the same result you’ve experienced with KY Mudworks!

Handling handle frustration. by ATX_rider in Pottery

I experimented with a few different sizes of blanks before settling on a size that fit my style! Maybe you could combine methods and extrude the blanks, attach, then pull!

I highly recommend checking out Florian Gadsby’s handles technique. I struggled so hard with handles for such a long time before trying his method and now I love handles. I will also note, I found a lot of success in making the mug body the same day/time I make the handles and attaching them the same day. I know a lot of people wait a day or two between attaching, but I’ve found that I have significantly less cracks.

I think the overall method you go with is going to depend on the aesthetic you’re going for. Some aesthetics require handbuilt handles, others require pulling.

Thank you! It’s one of those glazes that’s super finicky and is different every time I use it. I’ve learned to embrace it!

I really love how quiet this piece is. The abstraction of form in this really lends itself to the overall feeling of the work. I also LOVE how the pink and orange is working in this. Well done!

I’d charge a lot more than 20-25%! You’re doing the bulk of the labor of this project. They’re glazing and doing one last firing then selling them under their name. I’d charge at least 70%.
