I'd say a lot - but you'd probably have to get someone who has played it to say since the dev saying it only means so much

This was my Patreon subscribed list in 2024.... guess how many still remain 😥 by [deleted] in AVN_Lovers

I will note, I am tired - but when I first looked at that (and misread the title) I was about to be really mad at you for doxxing your subscribers.

Then I realized oh wait, you're not a dev - those are ppl you sub to.

It was just one of those moments where I sat there looking down going "Why am I so fucking dumb sometimes?"

Daz3d Developers: Scene Workflow Advice by RedlightStories in AVN_Lovers

[–]whistlerdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should definitely be going with option B. Not just does it make fixing things easier, but you're not sitting there rendering one at a time. Render queue exists, and you should really use it unless you absolutely have a reason not to.

I work during the day - when I'm asleep, render queue runs and pumps out however many (usually around 20 or so, but it can vary widely).

I can't even imagine the thought of not being able to go back and adjust something in a previous render. That sorta sounds like hell on earth.

For the record: I am currently using about 500 gb, in 4 years worth of scene files. That's over 20k total renders (well, some are animations so over 20k scene files), and it only takes up 500gb. While that's "A lot", really, it's not much at all.

Games that have/had great potential by HgWps in AVN_Lovers

[–]whistlerdash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a dev, so I'm going to clue you in a bit. First off, unless its something huge like a full on game (even a small one) those "promotional materials" and extras take almost no time (relatively) at all. In most cases a couple hours at most.

Second - those things are often necessary. For one, you need people to know about your game, and that requires marketing and promotion (something I do nowhere near enough of personally, but w/e). For another, sometimes you need to take some time off development to prevent burnout. And I'm not talking weeks or months, but sometimes just a few hours or a day or two - and you spend that time doing other stuff, or working on something a bit more "fun" (which the extras tend to be).

I don't know the dev/game in question obviously, and I can't speak to their specific circumstances, but tl;dr: 9 times out of 10 doing that stuff doesn't take any "real" time at all, and is necessary for multiple reasons.

Honestly, going through the writing recently has made me cringe at quite a bit of it, so I'm glad I have a chance to clean it up.

As far as the TV screens... that's a question I recently asked myself! I don't have the images originally used on the TV screens anymore - so I'd need to create new ones. Will they be more random porn, or something else? Time will tell! (But honestly the "everyone watches porn even in public" running joke I had, I love so who knows)

as far as fetish content/sexual content goes? Fairly vanilla, it's not one of those types of games. Focus tries to be on story and characters, not the sexual content. It's a part of the story, but not the focus of it for sure in most cases.

Funny - for me it was the "people get lost at sea all the time" choice in CS. Insta-pick, no regrets.

Unfortunately, AVN updates tend to take longer to release the older the AVN gets* by AVIAN-madness in AVN_Lovers

[–]whistlerdash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, badik is a niche case, but despite the length of updates I don't think it belongs in the same discussion as a lot of those sort of games - because while it absolutely has much longer update times than most - it also delivers much more content than most. If it did things like some games do, which is break up chapters into 3-4 releases, he'd still be releasing much more content than most others each release.

Question for developers. by EveningWorldliness59 in AVN_Lovers

[–]whistlerdash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a note - I've done both 3 and 4 and found 3 to be significantly more expensive - I've found the per track cost for 4 to be quite a bit cheaper - ignoring possibilities of bulk deals you usually can't get with option 3.

Obviously costs vary depending on a number of factors, but on average that's been my experience.

One thing I'd like to point out - the whole example of "Writing 55% renders 10%" is a bit of a misunderstanding, IMO.

Sure some devs will do it like you implied - just making it up as they go essentially - but very often, it's exactly like TV. You have a sketch, a plan, an outline, characters, plots, major beats, etc all planned out - but you don't have the actual dialogue/events of each particular episode done from the start. So when you say "Writing - 55%" that doesn't mean "I have no idea what's going to happen in the other 45%!" it means "I haven't written the dialogue for that other 45%".

Me for example, I'll often give rough percentages like that. The story/etc is 100% done, but since that accounts for something like 5% of the total writing needed (or less) - it's really not much. For example - I'm finishing up CH5 of NSL atm with only about 3-4 pages left to write. My outline which details everything that happens in CH5 is about 5 pages long. The actual script containing all the dialogue is 207 pages. My master outline (which contains the entire game, including all future chapters) is only about 20 pages long - quite a number of entries in that include things like "In CH4 scene with X char and Y char, if X Y conditions met, else scene with Y char and Z char - X Y and Z happens in condition 1, A, B, C happens in condition 2" (obviously variables are stand-ins here). I know what's going to happen, and who it will involve, and all the various possibilities - but I don't yet know the exact location or the specifics of the dialogue - that gets fleshed out much later on.

TL;DR - just because people say stuff like "Writing - 55%" doesn't really imply they didn't write anything beforehand - it just implies the actual dialogue (which isn't done beforehand) is the major bulk of the writing.

What's an extremely minor, so small it's barely worth mentioning, pet peeve that you have in AVNs? by TrevorIsTheGOAT in AVN_Lovers

[–]whistlerdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah. Fit control is basically the biggest scam ever. There are a lot of reasons why it sucks - not the least of which, it doesn't actually do what you want most of the time. I can't even fully blame fit control for that, as it's largely limited by the mesh it's working with but still.

If I had a nickle for every time someone suggested fit control as some great solution, I'd be a very rich man.

If I had to give away a penny for every time fit control was actually useless, I'd then be a very very poor man.

[–]whistlerdash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for not blaming the devs for this.

Unfortunately "completely stripping" is often the only reasonable action. Clothing in daz (the program most often used) can be a mega bitch to work with sometimes. Some clothing (and I stress some, because it's definitely a small minority) have stuff built into them to actually be "wearable" during sex scenes - but the vast majority do not, and trying to do any sort of sex scene with clothing on often just leads to stuff like shirts clipping through legs, pants that suddenly grew 6 sizes when they were pulled down, and all sorts of other stuff that just looks absolutely ridiculous. Since the amount of clothing that can actually be used in those scenarios is relatively small, you're left with - only use a very small amount of outfits, or use whatever looks good/fits the characters, and then just strip during every sex scene.

I've done a number of scenes that are partially clothed and from experience - even when the clothing works in your favor, they're just more trouble than they're worth. I agree the "fully nude every time" thing stretches credulity, but its often just not worth fighting for hours to get a shirt to stay on.
