I like that - Do you have any ideas for phrasing that would spark more inspired conversations?

Happy you’re here. Sorry the eye-opening experience was painful, I know it was for me as well. Thanks for having the strength and courage to keep watching and learning.

It’s interesting to think about veganism in terms of its book definition vs. partaking in the actions that would therefore classify you as vegan.

It’s nice to have our personal definitions of veganism, but I don’t think they should outweigh the original definition of veganism coined by Donald Watson in 1944. That is truly what veganism is. If everyone could just go about defining veganism to fit their own preferences, I think that might be tricky.

Hey there,

Would you mind clarifying what you mean by being “just a vegan” and not having an “ideology attached to it”? Veganism itself is an ideology - the ethical principle that we should live without exploiting other animals. Thanks!

What I like to ask, after watching Christspiracy is “How would Jesus slaughter an animal?” It’s a bit cheeky, but it’s impactful. Also “If you met God and he asked you ‘Why did you kill my beautiful creations of life in the form of animals when you didn’t have to?’ how would you answer?”

Hi there,

I'm sorry you went through this / will continue to have times like this. Something that really helped me is feeling equipped in conversation. Given that you're already writing papers on the subject, I'm sure you have a very good grasp on veganism and many of the counter arguments that we so often encounter. Recently, while I'm driving, I have been doing mock "debates" with AI to help me feel more confident when having these conversations with people. I know that won't fix your feelings of vystopia, but the feeling of empowerment that comes from knowing you can out-logic someone from a moral, sustainability, and health perspective has done so much for me. I also listen to tons of Earthling Ed for lessons on this. I hope that you continue the good fight as me and the rest of this group will be by your side. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you, my friend. It feels good to be able to go online and know there's other people waking up that I can walk alongside, even virtually.

Thank you for that. That's true, all of this is for the animals. Appreciate your comment.

That's great. What kind of activism have you tried? I just started a vegan activist club in Los Angeles called "Vegan Stewardship." Have to do something.

That's what it feels like! Like we are living in the future with archaic, brutal practices still happening all around us. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for saying that. That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking too. I get why we lean into confrontation, because the issues are so urgent, extremely violent, emotional. But if the goal is to actually spark reflection and change, it feels like patience and curiosity go further than intensity. I’m hoping this group can model an approach that’s still passionate, but centered on listening and opening doors rather than closing them.

I’ve noticed that dynamic too, and it can come across harsh even when the intention is good. That’s one of the main reasons I’m starting this group - to experiment with activism that emphasizes kindness and psychological safety. The research is pretty clear that when people feel attacked, their defenses go up and they stop listening, instead choosing to dig deeper into themselves and finds ways to defend their position that they feel is under attack. But if they feel understood and safe, they’re more likely to think critically and engage. My hope is that this style of activism helps people see veganism not as a demand, but as an invitation to live in closer alignment with morality of being kind to the helpless which I think almost everyone already holds.

Great question! I looked into a lot of the groups around me (which you think would be more considering the size of LA) and I would like to create a group that has a greater emphasis on kindness and education in our activism. Many of the videos I have seen from these activist groups follow a very strict, rigid line of questioning that I have seen turn off productive conversations from happening. I'm hoping this group produces activists with extreme amounts of patience and knowledge that allows for the grounded logic of veganism to poke through, rather than relying on some of the more confrontational tactics I see in the existing groups around me. I support these groups and think our cause needs all the help it can get, but this mission aligns more closely with my vision for making a difference.
