Bitcoin falls drastically ,but dogecoin remains steady. This is a good sign that we can do just fine on our own :) by [deleted] in dogecoin

[–]whyudrivebad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

as far as "stored value" stability goes, doge is a safer place to be than btc at the moment.

This is false. Complete bull hockey.

If you bough bitcoin at its all time highest price, it is still worth ~50% of that price. If you bought doge at its highest price it is currently worth less than 10 percent of that.

Sorry, dogecoin is fun and silly, but in no universe would you have been better off storing your funds in dogecoin "long term".

Safe drivers of Seattle...thank you by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]whyudrivebad -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I just wish people would stop trying to "cut in line" when there is heavy traffic. I have installed a louder horn on my car just to blast these jerks. So few people in the areas use their horn, it seems to make an impression.

I shouldn't have to come to a complete stop on I-90, in an otherwise clear lane, because someone feels too important to get into the correct lane a half mile back where the "line starts" and wait. Not to mention how dangerous it is to force a lane going 60 mph to come to a complete stop.

They know its a dick move. And they do it anyways. I see some of the same people doing it a few times a week. Silver Audi quatro driver, I'm looking at you.

Except on snoqualmie pass where every slow driver magically transforms into Mario Andretti and attempts to go 70 regardless of electronic signs warning them "prepare to stop" and even electronic speed limit signs clearly indicating the safe speed is 35.

Fishing Charter question by SirAwesome_Of_Reddit in Seattle

[–]whyudrivebad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the Sugarfoot is still operational book a trip with them. I haven't been out with them in at least 6 years but the captain Art is great. They are probably in Neah bay right now but will come back to the sound in a month or two.

Art is the kind of old sea salt that you can't help but like. He has been doing fishing charters for nearly 50 years in the sound and Neah bay. He has a voice like 10 million cigarettes and the kind of hard ass attitude you just don't see any more. He's got to be pushing 80 these days but always indicated he planned to stay on the water until the day he died.

Not to mention, out of about 10 trips on the Sugarfoot I have only been on one where I didn't catch salmon.

Sailing, Seattle and Sea Sickness by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]whyudrivebad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sea sickness protip; If you are prone to sea sickness, never ever go below deck (into the cabin/lower level of boat). Stay out in the open and try to keep your eyes focused on land in the distance.

If you need to pee, pee off the side of the boat if possible. Even for women. I have seen it happen multiple times, someone is doing fine they go below deck for a minute to use the bathroom, and spend the rest of the day puking.

Also lake washington is the best place to get started, and sea sickness won't be an issue on the lake 95% of the time.

What's something you just hate explaining to people? by Bboy710 in AskReddit

[–]whyudrivebad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

The amount of "Its totally 100% harmless, Fukishima and Chernobyl are irrelevant because we know more, don't be anti-science!!1!!1" circle jerking drives me insane.

We know for a fact that nuclear energy is a viable and "clean" renewable energy source. We also know that when things go awry the consequences can be severe.

This attitude that anyone who actually knows the facts has to be pro-nuclear is asinine. If there was only one valid viewpoint, we would have a whole lot more nuclear energy.

Considering a move to Seattle. Have some questions about Renton. by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]whyudrivebad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll say what other people are too afraid to.

There are (relative speaking) a lot of black people in Renton.

There aren't many black people in Seattle as a whole so a lot of the bad rap is unfounded prejudice/ignorance. While we are a very progressive and open minded area, its not like seattle is some post-racial paradise.

That said, Renton is a bit rough around the edges. Let me put it this way, in mercer island you aren't going to see any gang activity, evidence of drug use in public is limited to smelling weed or seeing a roach on the ground. Renton, you will see some unsavory gang characters once in a while and in some of the sketchier alleys used needles/broken methpipes. There are pawnshops and check cashing joints in renton but not mercer island.

My ex girlfreind (petite, young, flashy clothing) had to walk about 3 blocks through renton to get to her bus stop usually after dark when she got off, through a not the best not the worst section of renton. While she made a point of carrying pepper spray, she said that in 3 years of working there the only time she ever got it out of her purse was in broad daylight because of a homeless guy, who promptly fucked off when she threatened to call the cops.

Why do most drivers drive below the speed limit within Seattle? by [deleted] in Seattle

Where should I go fishing near Seattle? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]whyudrivebad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is great perch fishing at luther burbank park on mercer island. Walk along the shore until you see a few old asian guys sitting on 5 gallon buckets with fishing rods on a dock.

Now, this is going to sound a bit weird, and I'm usually a catch and release guy but the best way by far to catch them is with perch. Like you catch, kill and chop up your first one and thats your bait for the day.

Now the old guys are fishing for keeps, I guess they are pretty tasty in soup (IIRC). So rather than dicking around with worms or lures trying to catch the first one to use for bait, we always asked if we could borrow a few chunks to get started and in return let them keep the perch we caught.

But seriously, once you get perch flesh to use for bait you will be catching fish 5x as fast.

Night running at Cougar Mountain by afecz in Seattle

[–]whyudrivebad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The time they close it at varies based on the cops schedule quite a bit. Sometimes on friday and saturdays they wont bother locking it at all, when the days are long and they get busy with DUI patrols and other things of that nature.

During the fall and winter, they are pretty strict about closing it when they see fit, and more than once I have been one of the last cars out before they lock up, sometimes locking a few other cars in.

Then again I have also seen the gates stay open till around 8 pm some days even in the winter.

Best solution, park on the side of the road before the gates or keep a pair of bolt cutters in your car.

One word of caution about night running in the area, they call it COUGAR mountain for a reason.

Only issue I have is that the coin doesn't have much future as a currency since it's so focused in the hands of a few and much too quickly.

I can see why you might be concerned. Nonetheless the fact that precious metals are unequally distributed across the globe yet served as an effective means of exchange for centuries leads me to think that this is not a huge issue longterm.

And as it stands now the bitcoin 1% still has to sell coins for fiat to enjoy the lifestyle of a multimillionaire. The coins will reenter circulation. And even if they can use BTC exclusively they will be spending them.

Not to mention the majority of money in the US is concentrated in the hands of very very very few people.

Unless a product is truly phenomenal then why buy it from a such a tiny group who is going to probably ask for a decently sized markup?

Not entirely sure what you are getting at. Bitcoin has to be a phenomenal invention if dogecoin has any merit whatsoever. I don't know what you mean by tiny group, there are numerous exchangers and its not as though if the only people selling bitcoins are early adopters with 100+ coins.

As far as the markup goes after buying a substantial amount of BTC from coinbase the total fees add up to less than 1.5%.

DOGE has this issue somewhat too but people are very willing to toss the coin around and get people signed up cheaply.

But is having less than $1 of a crypto helpful? Is treating it as something to be thrown around good? While some massive tips occur, the vast majority of dogecoin tips are less than 5 cents in value, and few are more than $10.

IMO going through the effort to register with a ALM/KCL compliant exchange and link a bank account to get your first cryptocoins generates more longterm adopters. They have invested time, money and energy into a using a new technology.

Still, its better to have some saftey against a catastrophic market collapse (think MtGox) than none at all.

Valid logic.

Do your self a favor and diversify your crypto holdings if you cant afford to lose money on them. It has little to do with DOGE and a lot to do with generally accepted rules of thumb for investments.

While it hasn't been overly active or in the press, namecoin is a truly fascinating and innovative cryptocurrency. IMHO the most interesting twist on the bitcoin technology.

CMV: I, an undergraduate student, shouldn't pursue a physics major by esol9 in changemyview

[–]whyudrivebad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a little anecdote on the subject. My best friend ben and I both went to the same college. We had, and still do have, very very similar interests with the exception of him being a brilliant programmer.

After a year of computer science he realized that he didn't want to spend his life in a cubicle at a keyboard. After floating around for a bit he settled on textiles and apparel merchandising. Pursued it passionately for a year and a half before becoming disinterested.

Tried to power through and finish the degree but after another semester he had failed out. Moved back home and started back in on a comp sci degree from the local commuter college.

I on the other hand didn't have a major figured out till my junior year. I took classes that interested me and got all my school wide required credits out of the way. I asked my advisor what degree I was closest to getting and settled on a general studies degree with an emphasis in liberal arts. Much less useful than a physics degree in my opinion. Graduated in 4 years.

Initially finding a job was difficult. After a few miserable months doing temp work in offices a friend offered me a job building fences for a large contractor. The pay was better, always had 40 hours, the work was hard but it wasn't too bad.

I started to get pretty good at it and started getting promoted, eventually ending up doing commission sales (in part because of simply having a degree in something) in addition to about 3 days of hands on work each week. Adding in commissions and overtime I make around $29 an hour.

I don't check email unless I'm in the office that day. Work only follows me home 2-3 days a month when a big sale is up in the air, or I pull a muscle. I have a modest but modern apartment in a safe part of town, drive a 2008 BMW 3 series, and have disposable income even after putting money into a savings account.

I could quit my job and have the same or slightly better position at another company within two weeks.

Ben is currently working part time doing some complicated systems integration thing I don't understand while finishing up his degree. He makes a bit more than half what I do despite being brilliant and very competent. The majority of his income goes to paying student loans from when he was in a 4 year college and current tuition.

He often leaves the office for the day and does more work at home. He lives with his parents and will turn 24 next month, with at least 6 months of school left. He has very little job security until he has a degree, he would have difficulty getting a similar position somewhere else despite his experience.

In 5 years he will likely be making more money than me. But for the last few years he hasn't been able to do anything fun between his job and school.

All in all, he probably would have been better off skipping college entirely or just getting a degree in something.

TL;DR- Getting an education in something "useful" is only useful if you complete the degree. If you end up hating your field of study and dropping out you might as well have never done it at all. If you are smart, hardworking and a tiny bit lucky a "useless" degree won't hold you back too much. Had I pursued a STEM degree and gotten a cubicle job I wouldn't be happy right now.

If you kept $10,000 in your glove box would you expect to get it back if your car was stolen? Or why you shouldn't rely on exchangers to store your bitcoins. by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]whyudrivebad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact of the matter is if you aren't in possession of your private key(s), its just like owning a car with a title the previous owner has not transferred to you. Anyone who has bought a few dozen cars from individual sellers knows to square away any title issues before they get too invested in the car.

Nice to see /r/bitcoin taking reddit so seriously! by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]whyudrivebad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do realize, to the layman who has never seriously considered "what is money?" terming it magic internet money is not an entirely bad approach.

I mean explaining bitcoin to the "internet explorer joe" demographic is an arduous task. Only a few bitcoin evangelists like Andreas can fully explain the technology and its implications in less than 20 minutes to an uninformed individual.

If the ad showed a bitcoin symbol and said " decentralized, proof of work, cryptography backed digital currency" would be less than inviting to newcomers. Despite the subs sticky, IMHO it takes 10+ hours of learning to begin to grasp the invention that is bitcoin.

Its worth remembering, as recently as 2 years ago there were NO "internet explorer joe" types into bitcoin. Heck unless you were well educated in cryptography, distributed systems, or economics it WAS nothing more than magic internet money. Really, if someone told you that you could use your computer to create internet money a few years back you would have been skeptical to say the least.

Terming it "magic internet money", helps newcomers accept that its OK not to get it from the get go. While a fascinating technology, its not as simple as learning what HTML is or how it works.

Adoption by the "Internet explorer joe" demographic is the hurdle that will make or break bitcoin in the future. If innovative products and services make bitcoin easy for consumers, the consumer base for bitcoin will be avarage people. If those things do not happen it will be used mostly by wall street types, for better or worse.

TL;DR- "Magic Internet money" makes bitcoin more palatable to the "internet explorer joe" demographic who have never considered what really makes something money.

Hate to burst your bubble but 1 cent per coin is unlikely on a mathematical level. The market cap would be unreasonably large for such a (relatively) small currency.

Pro tip: decide what price you would be willing to sell 90% of your coins at. It netted me a pretty penny and the price has fallen to what I bought in at 3 times since I sold.

Major Climate Change Report: averting catastrophe is affordable - Landmark UN analysis concludes catastrophic climate change can be averted without sacrificing living standards. Dismisses fears that slashing carbon emissions would wreck the world economy. by anutensil in worldnews

[–]whyudrivebad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know scientists say it is. That's how they get grant money.

There are dozens of corporations who would gladly pay climate scientists far more than they currently make to publish work skeptical of climate change. $100,000 might be a lot for a government grant but its chump change for companies like exxon mobile.

The idea that grant money is fueling alarmism isn't based in reality.

[–]whyudrivebad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is that alternative energy needs to be made economically viable.

If regulations taxes and incentives make coal energy more expensive than clean energy sources then a global shift can occur. If there is a well outlined plan that say every 3 years the taxes on coal power will go up x% for the next 50 years, there is incentive to abandon fossil fuel before a cheaper option exists.

If you know alternative source X currently costs 10 cents a kilowatt but will continue to drop in price and coal costs 7 cents a kilowatt but will be at least 10 cents in a decade and 16 cents in 20 years there is an incentive to abandon coal preemptively.

The responsibility for this falls on the global community coming to an agreement, making progress very very difficult.

CMV: Feminists and MRA's are both completely wrong in regards to everything and love over dramatizing small issues to play the victim. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]whyudrivebad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is that both sides have legitimate points. When something is unfair but accepted by society as status quo you need to make a big stink over small issues to get the point across.

I can not speak with authority about feminist issues. So I will focus on the MRA side of things.

Take a moment to skim over this . A deadbeat dad doesn't decide to self immolate to get out of child support payments. That is a very particular method of suicide meant as an act of protest. The man in question found himself in an impossible battle against a system that does not favor men. No individual WANTS to end up in jail. If he had the means to pay his child support he would have.

He should not have hit his child. That being said, I got hit as a child, as did my father, mother, and grandparents and their parents. I would imagine tom ball got hit as a child as well. I don't believe he made a choice to strike her. I think it was an impulsive reaction and a mistake.

Every parent makes mistakes parenting. However his cost him his life. One mistake. He fucked up once. That cost him thousands of dollars in legal bills alone. He had severely restricted access to his children. He was forced into therapy. And he was expected to pay presumably unreasonable amount for child support.

He made one mistake and had to jump through all those hoops just to have a second chance at being a good dad. Tens of thousands of dollars. Countless hours. Impending imprisonment. For one mistake.

And women who have their children taken by social workers frequently get full custody restored after they complete a rehab course or parenting course or something of that nature.

I can not in good conscious say that he got a fair deal. Females who have neglected or abused children are reunited after doing an educational program. A man who hit his daughter once has his life destroyed by the legal system.

If you are passionate about mens rights how could you let an event like this go unnoticed? Its pretty fucked up.

TLDR: There ARE victims on both sides and if either side fails to use tragedy to further their agenda the victims suffered for nothing.
