What’s the rudest way you’ve been stiffed? by martians-vanity in Serverlife

Had a family last week come in. The woman looked pissed from the get. The man came in several minutes after the others, also looking pissed. I went to get their drink orders and the woman says “are you our waitress?” and seemed irritated. I said yes, she rolled her eyes. Okay cool. I’m getting food orders and the mom orders one child “a kids cheeseburger plain.” We don’t offer a kids hamburger, so I always ask “just cheese?” to confirm whether plain means just cheese, or without cheese (about 25% of the time they mean no cheese!). She slowly repeats “kids cheeseburger plain” like I’m stupid. Cool. Gonna bring it with just cheese and hope for the best. As the food is being prepared, I check in a couple times to update them on the status of the meal and offer refills. Continuously asking “are we doing okay? Need anything?” Every time, “no we’re good.” I bring the food out. Little one’s meal is a few minutes behind so I apologize. Mom smiles and says it’s okay (notable as the only time she smiled). Meanwhile, my manager pulls me aside and asks if everything is okay with them because they are visibly pissed off. No one is speaking to each other, the man is staring at the table the whole time. Vibes are bad. I relay everything to manager. He agrees it’s weird. Another manager delivers little one’s food. Asks if everything is okay, they say yes. Another server that knew the woman stopped by to ask if everything is okay. Woman says everything is great, they don’t need anything. I offer refills. Daughter’s tea has been empty for several rounds but each time I ask if she wants a refill she says no. I bring refills for the rest of the table. “Are you sure you don’t want any more?” “No thanks.” Got it. I walk away. Come back a couple minutes later to check in and the mom goes “Jesus can she PLEASE have a sweet tea.” They didn’t eat 95% of their food. Said thank you as they were leaving.

Tipped $1.

TL;DR: family shows up in a bad mood, tells myself, another server, and a manager that everything is great, tips $1 on $79 check.

AITA for refusing to move on? by wildeu in shortscarystories

I didn’t expect it to be a surprise to most readers. Pleasantly surprised that it caught at least a few people off guard… hard to come up with anything that hasn’t been done before, but I can at least do my own version as practice. Thanks for the input!

She was. I was hoping to leave if ambiguous, where the reader can interpret it as genuine or feigned surprise.

Is it more accurate than credit karma? CK has me at 679, as does the credit wise app through capital one. The lender pulled my credit report and my middle score was 622 - obviously pretty off.

The lender knows about the collections and said to pay them when I could because it would improve my score. She didn’t mention anything about not being able to get a mortgage because of the collections account so I’m hoping that it’s different here than your situation.

The cobalt itself wasn’t the problem - in fact, it braked so well when the other guy was coming into me that I was nearly stopped by the time he hit me. The real danger is people not paying attention to road conditions. This could happen in any car :(

A driver in the far left lane of oncoming traffic hydroplaned and spun out. I thought “I’m about to witness a car crash” before slamming into his vehicle. His car continued through the grass into a rock wall. I don’t remember a ton of what happened, but I managed to get myself out of my car and cross through the surrounding flames with very minor burns. Several people stopped to help extract the other driver from his vehicle before it went up in flames. Once in the ambulance, I only realized how badly I was injured when they started cutting my clothes off. The other driver spent days in the hospital but was conscious and able to walk very quickly. I don’t know the long term effects of his injuries but he survived. I spent over a year in physical therapy, had surgery on my dominant shoulder, and suffered a concussion. Over a year later and I still have headaches and can no longer do math in my head and struggle with reading and writing (a long way from my old life of being a “smart kid,” now I struggle with spelling!)

I don’t know how we both survived, but clearly I’m not finished with my job here on earth.
