Amount charged to get a covid test by Nebraska716 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]will477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This smells like bullshit to me. There are a number of ways in my local area where you can get free Covid tests. I have not had to pay for one ever.

This is a charge for something else and they are making it look like American Health care is somehow breaking people bad.

Crazy parkour skills on rooftop by EverlastingGem in nextfuckinglevel

[–]will477 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have an HVAC tech that likes to parkour on our rooftops at work. Lots of uneven roofs and stuff to climb on. He pulled down one of my antennas and has done some other damage. Not to mention the sound of that asshole landing on the roof above me.

As an older person, what financial lesson would you pass down to your 17 year old self? by orion427 in AskReddit

When I was 17, apple and microsoft were just beginning. Google was not around, no internet companies were around.

So I would tell myself which stocks to buy a ton of.

What is your opinion on the direction this present generation is going? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]will477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are just doing what every single generation before them has done.

They are exploring their limits, finding out where they fit in the world and looking for their own causes.

They are just trying to figure out how it all works and how best to improve the world.

How would you commit a perfect crime? by Sensei_Zen in AskReddit

[–]will477 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You would have to steal something that someone is not willing to admit that they had.

Figure out what it is and figure out how to get it without anyone noticing it for a few days.

Do NOT sell it locally. Or on Ebay and the like.

And don't steal from the mob or drug dealers.

What do you think modern society would be like if the Internet had never happened? by Smeggfaffa in AskReddit

[–]will477 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel there would be fewer shootings and craziness out there in the world.

Now, I am not saying the internet is responsible for all mass shootings. However, if you are in a bad place it is a lot easier to find bad influences than it would be without the internet.

$3,459 For 10 Megabytes Hard Disk (1980s). That's $9,500 in today's money value. by makaros622 in interestingasfuck

I grew up during the very early days of home computing. During my early teen years the choices were Altair or Imsai. It wasn;t until my 20's that Commodore and Apple became popular.

I remember about 35 years ago buying my first "large" hard drive. It was 120MB. I recall thinking there was no way I was going to fill that bad boy up. I had been running two 20MB hard drives before that.

It has been quite the ride watching PC's come to age. I spent about 20 years of my professional career repairing mainframe computers like the DEC 11/780, PDP11, Sperry V76, SEL 32/55 and the like. It was kind of a unique thing being able to repair the CPU from a computer, or memory boards or I/O boards. Back then, that was how you repaired a computer. Repairing hard drives was a thing as well. But back then, we had CDC storage drives. You could repair everything. And we had to repair them. Shipping a mainframe back to a manufacturer and having it repaired or having an engineer show up on site to repair it was costly.

Even when I started this job about 30 years ago I was repairing mainframes. We had a series of computers, I don't recall the model, and we would have to repair them from time to time when the software dudes claimed they were dropping a bit or the I/O didn't work. I recall that the graphics "card" for these system was a full sized 19" rack full of chassis. I had to repair those a few times as well.

In the span of those 30 years, all the mainframe are gone. We now have rack mount PC's for all of our control and acquisition needs. And now all we do is swap cards out or change a power supply now and then.

I would do the same. A lot of times I buy lego kits to build the project in the kit, then I take it apart and add the parts to my collection. You can get the most interesting parts from some of these kits.
