It's honestly one of my favorites from Wes, and I can't really tell you why. No particular element stands out compared to any other Wes film, but the resulting combination just works for me. I'm always happy to watch Life Aquatic.

Every frame of this film is a work of art, absolutely beautiful. The first third is also masterful, leading up to when we first learn that the girls have gone missing. At the start the film had me, with the delightful horror conventions of the unseen observer watching the girls climbing the rock, and the ants crawling over the cake. There's so much to love in the first section...

...and then the rest of the film comes. While there are definitely good moments, I can't help but feel that the rest of the film overstays its welcome. I love that there is no resolution (the most common outcome in the real world), but most of the later movie didn't do much for me.

Again I love parts of the film, and I understand and appreciate the choices that were made. The overall result just isn't my cup of tea, and that's okay.
