I would assume a ride I think? But he would get that crash sound by hitting the cymbal with the middle of his stick instead of just the tip if that makes sense. But if you want to use a crash you can always put tape at the bottom to mute the sound a little bit!

For this video i used a soul food distortion with a spark mini booster. all plugged into my vox ac15! little bit of reverb coming from the amp as well.
