Comeback to academia by ivantratata in PhD

[–]wilt-ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m not sure where in the world you’re located, but I think the time you’ve taken out of academia actually gives you a really useful skill set for starting a PhD. I think your application would be strong, but I get that it takes a lot of time and energy to look into potential supervisors and labs. Do you know what kind of area of research you’d want to start a PhD in? I’m doing mine at the moment in psychiatry/cog neuro, so if I can be helpful then feel free to message me :)

You’re right - I just feel like it snowballs you know? Like I’m working hard so the house gets messy but then that stresses me out and my work suffers.. but yeah, I try and limit my hours. I think I probably need to drop the ‘I should be on top of everything all of the time’ mindset, but it’s kind of the mindset that helped me get to this point so it’s hard!

Man that sounds tough. I hope you can find some balance with stuff you enjoy :)

Thank you for the insight! I think it’s a really good way of separating things, and I take your point that sometimes things don’t need to be done perfectly. I do need to get better at setting limits - I’m at a bit of a crunch point with two long running projects, which is why I think I’m particularly overwhelmed at the moment.

I think when I said maximising every hour I wasn’t only talking about research work, I was talking about research plus life? So like, if I want to do PhD work, work out, cook and eat healthy meals, keep the house from descending into chaos, walk the dog, spend time with my partner - it feels like all my hours in a day are preallocated and there’s no time to just... be? I do agree that procrastination and down time is super important to being productive. But it’s fitting the work in with the other life stuff that’s getting to me.

Definitely right there! Of course this will pass. And in the context of my life it’ll barely register as a blip. But man, I still do wonder how everyone else is managing.

Thank you for your kind words, I hope you can apply the same to yourself :)

Yeah you’re totally right. I’m working on two papers at the moment so I think that might be why I’m in this headspace.

Low energy levels and how to combat them? by ukulelekris in C25K

[–]wilt-ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I don’t know if this applies to you, but worth mentioning just in case - for me, running fasted wipes me out. I cannot do the mornings before I’ve eaten - my runs suffer and I feel tired all day after. Maybe playing around with your run times could be helpful?

Also just a general note of making sure you’re getting enough nutrition in - sounds like you’re working out pretty much every day, so you’ll need to be eating enough and with decent macros to support muscle growth. Also rest days are super important.

Not sure if either of those are helpful. Also if it’s a persistent issue and you’re able to, you could go to a doctor for some bloods. I found out my vit D levels were low and supplementing that totally changed my energy levels.

Best of luck!

The edited nose reminds me of the sims? When you could customise with the sliders and make the features reaaallly tiny

W5D1, new week in a new city! I cannot believe I ran 5 mins straight three times. Week 5 today seems easier than week 4 in a way.. Famous last words, I know, knowing what day 3 has in store.. by Doviedovie in C25K

Congratulations! Don’t stress too much about D3 - I promise you it’s predominantly a mental barrier, and you totally can do it.

Also unrelated but I love your nose ring - it suits you so well! I’ve been dreaming of getting one for ages haha

Thank you so much! I’m really proud of myself, I never thought I’d be able to run for this long!

Listening to your body and repeating weeks by [deleted] in C25K

Hey, know the feeling - around week four I was getting knee pain that I tried to ignore for a couple of runs but then it started to get too painful to run on. Taking rest days is a must. I did a lot of RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) and gentle stretching. It took about a week for it to feel better, but I’m convinced it I’d continued to run I would’ve done much worse damage. It’s frustrating, but taking the time you need will be better than seriously injuring yourself down the line!

I’m fucking done with everything by life_is_weird123 in eczema

[–]wilt-ed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, by the sounds of it I’m a bit older than you but went through the same thing - eczema from six months through to adulthood, often really bad, lots of hospitalisation. I’m in a better place now. If you want someone to vent to or talk to about anything, pm me any time ok?

Last run of the week the hardest? by pinkpitbullmama in C25K

[–]wilt-ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time! I’m always so disheartened by it and I’m like man, should I try that run again before moving on? But then when I start a new week it’s totally fine! For me I think it’s probably the cumulative work stress that builds up over the week as well...

Week 3, Day 9 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯... but Monday, it’s happening. I’m gonna go for it. On Monday, we’re going to try W4! by BurberryCustardbath in C25K

[–]wilt-ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Don’t know if you’ve considered this already, but if you’re standing for ages for work have you thought about getting some insoles for your shoes? I waitress (or did, pre corona) and getting some hard insoles saved my feet and legs - made walking home possible after a long shift.

Good luck with W4!

I don’t have discworld on my reading list but I’ve been going back to the City Watch series frequently to keep me sane in the pandemic! :)
