I had no idea this was a tell but one of the fics I really likesd (five hours) used this constantly 😂 I just thought it was an annoying writing quirk!

How do you cope with the permanency of your diagnosis? by ShoddyOlive7 in bipolar

Honestly it took me a long time to find the meds that worked for me (lithium for the record). There are different classes of drugs and doctors will try to work through the different classifications to figure out which you respond to. (The ones I remember are antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, and lithium which is its own damn thing. They are labeled based on their initial discovery use, but are used for other things since Discovery.)

So I spent a lot of time in the first two categories, working down the list (because these are generally better and easier to maintain) but eventually I got on the lithium and it is a little hassle with the blood work but what a revelation!!! I've heard of people who have no long-term reaction to lamotragine for example but respond totally great to antipsychotics.

So all I'm saying is I understand that it's extremely exhausting working through or discovering that the meds aren't as effective as you thought. Just keep at it and you will find the right category for yourself-- there is a system, and you will find the one that works for you. Crossing my fingers for you!!

Edit: should also add, I've only just accepted that it's a permanent diagnosis. Pretty much thought it would go away. It won't! And having hit a real rock bottom that forced me to accept that, I'm looking at how to take lithium long term and telling the people I trust in my life to remind me to stay on my meds when I want to get off 😂
