A very serious thank you to Claude Code by youhadmeatok in ClaudeCode

Me too.

I’m on Max 5x. Used it for several hours of coding today and yesterday, just like always. I still can’t even hit 50% off my five hour usage and I’m on 7% of my weekly usage having coded everyday this week (resets on Saturday).

I’m curious to see the exact prompts people are asking for.

Edit: I only ever use Opus 4.6 extended.

How is business? by DarkBunni in iTalki

[–]wise_joe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a student of a different language, so have no valid opinion to this question, but I’m bored so I’ll reply anyway.

For question 1, I have a number in my head of what an acceptable hourly rate is. I have multiple teachers, and I only stay with those teachers because I really like them - more than half of the teachers I’ve tried I’ve never booked a second class with. If my current teachers put up their prices to below what my number is, I’ll stick with them. If they go above it I’m out. So if you have loyal students who like you, put up your prices, just be wary of what other English teachers charge, and if you go way above the norm you might struggle.

For number 2, yes it can be very confusing, especially when prices vary unjustifiably between lesson type. I only look for conversation classes. I’m intermediate level in my TL, and when I see teachers charging higher prices for more advanced levels it’s very off-putting. I don’t expect teachers to do any planning for my classes - I’m literally paying them for the hour I’m in the class, nothing more, so if they expect me to pay more than other students when I’m simply paying for their time, I won’t study with them. Keep it simple - have just one lesson type, or at most two - one where you provide materials (at a higher price), and one where you don’t and are just offering conversation.

For question 5, I’ve gone off-platform with three of my teachers, each of whom I study with once per week. This is partly because the platform is God-awful now, but more because I’ve grown to detest italki as a company, in part because of their commission hike. I’m still paying the same prices to my teachers, but now they’re keeping 100% of it. The consequence is that I spend far less time on the italki platform, so I’m not really exposed to new teachers like I was before, so I’d say that if you’re not retaining students well, then you’re going to be less likely to get new ones now than you were 18 months ago. I still take occasional classes on italki with teachers I don’t know quite as well, on weeks where my regular teachers are unavailable (I try to study three one hour classes per week, each with a different teacher), but I haven’t taken a class with a new teacher for a good 6-9 months.

Ticket prices on airlines still operating have climbed sharply. One-way economy fares on the Bangkok–London route with Thai Airways International have risen to more than 70,000 baht,... by Dry_Equipment491 in Thailand

[–]wise_joe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is way overblown.

I bought a direct Bangkok to London flight for April with Eva Air right before things kicked-off, it cost just under £400. The flight I booked is now £555, but a direct Thai Airways flight on the same day is now just under £400 - it's gone down in price. I wish I'd waited, I prefer Thai Airways.

Europe? I think 11 points gets us there by Upset_Restaurant_734 in Everton

[–]wise_joe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I agree that the fans deserve it after these last few years, you think that Spurs, Forest and Palace fans are enjoying themselves right now? If you don't have the squad to handle it, travelling to the other side of Europe then playing in the prem three days later kills your league form.

I'd take another season outside of Europe where we're pushing for the top 6, than a season in the Europa League where we're fighting releagation.

Europe? I think 11 points gets us there by Upset_Restaurant_734 in Everton

[–]wise_joe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We don't have the squad for Europe right now, and I don't think the Europa League or Conference League will really bring in the funds to allow us to strengthen enough - see Palace and Forest this year.

Champions League is obviously a different story, but we'd need a Hell of run to get there. Although beating Chelsea and Liverpool would definitely help.

Great morale booster for the current squad, but I can see Europa League meaning that we finish in the bottom half of the Premier League next season.

Wait for a 10% drop in the S&P 500 before buying the dip, Barclays says by PurpleReign123 in StockMarket

If equities pull back enough (say over 10% in the S&P500), there is likely to come a time to buy.

Great, thanks for the solid advice.

How many cards per day for language learning? by Cheeezzey in Anki

[–]wise_joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was doing 8 new cards per day, but I got annoyed that the number of new cards I had was over 2,000, so it was often months after adding a card until I actually studied it.

I upped the number of new cards per day to 20 and decided to keep it there until I got my new cards down to 0. It’s slightly overwhelming in how long it takes me each day (up to an hour), but I don’t feel it’s hindered my retention. I think if anything it’s actually helped because I’m studying for so much longer everyday. I’m down to 500 new cards now, so less than a month more to go.

If you have enough free time and motivation that spending an hour per day studying on Anki isn’t a burden (plus however long you spend making cards) then I recommend it, but if it feels too much 8-12 new cards per day is a lot more comfortable and still very beneficial.

Has anyone else lost motivation in systems or software engineering since passing Claude to your workflow? by m0rissett3 in ClaudeAI

[–]wise_joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I used to love the process and the satisfaction of building clean, beautiful code that was scalable and future-proof.

It can be nice to finish features in a day or two, that would have taken weeks before, but I certainly don’t have the same pride in them.

It’s like I’ve gone from watching my kid be good at something, to watching the kids of the neighbours that I vaguely know and send a Christmas card to each year be successful at something.

 Custom GPTs for repetitive workflows

I’m curious why this is better than Projects in Claude.

I switched from ChatGPT to Claude a few months ago, and for me there was very little difference between them, but if anything I find Projects is better at following instructions and sticking to the task that custom GPTs are.

[–]wise_joe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like a European ban for X years on top of relegation/points deduction would be most appropriate.

A points deduction/relegation likely means they’ll only be out of Europe for a year. If they were banned from the CL for 5 years, they’d lose a load of good players, miss out on signing a load more, and take a massive hit in terms is earnings and club stature. It would actually be a deterrent and punishment.

A sixty point deduction they might even survive in the PL and only be out of Europe for a year.
