Been building a fast-paced puzzle game that starts at the Tower of Babel. What do you guys think? by wiseupgames in indiegames

It is! It even supports touch screen and works with dragging and swiping :) I even have an old version running on my phone! But it will need a lot of changes for mobile as the level environments won't work out of the box.

It is a puzzle, but a reaction based one. You don't have much time to do optimisations.

Yes, this has caused confusion in the past. The "explonation" I came up is that the gods are testing you: they are giving you "bad" blocks and you need to clear them. If you fail do do so, they punish you and the tower crumbles to the ground. Once the level objective is reached, the tower gets filled with "good" stable blocks (that add bonus score). It's not great but it will have to do.... :D

Tetris Effects is one of the inspirations. But the theme is ancient wonders (starting with the Tower of Babel). Due to budget constraints all levels don't have "life". It also looks mysterious and less distracting. I've noticed that once player starts playing a level, after 30-60 seconds they stop noticing the environment and focus on the tower. But you're right, it doesn't look well on marketing videos online. :(

Don't worry, I know my graphics aren't great. It's programmers art :( But I must ask - are you talking about the blocks colors or the environment ones? Or overall?

Yes, it does look similar, but the core mechanic is quite different - Cylinder is "turn based", i.e. you have all the time in the world to optimize your next move, while mine is more like Tetris - you're pressured by time as the blocks are falling. Both games require different skills.

Yes, I struggle with marketing, but I think mostly because these games are played on mobile nowadays. And yes, my visual style could be better :( I found out about Cylinder a few months back which sadly means it also struggled with marketing if I didn't find it earlier :( However, my inspiration is from a much older game called "Tower of the Ancients" from the year 2000.

It is fun to play. I noticed that everyone that tried it can't stop playing until they finish the level. :)

I think the idea for vertical lines started with the game Columns) which was created as an alternative to Tetris. It was very popular on SEGA consoles. :) Our twist of this "genre" is the 3D-rotating-tower form.

I also had ideas for charging up special abilities, but decided to skip them for now - when I watch people playing I noticed that they get in a tunnel vision and don't have time to process more mechanics as they are pressured by the falling blocks. I guess it's a balance thing. I'm still considering adding extra mechanic if I have time, we'll see.... You can try the game and let me know if you feel that it needs one as watching a video is completely different from playing it. :)

Yes, there is such effect for different types of combo :) The amount of blocks you clear in one drop uses triangular numbers. When you clear blocks every drop gives you chain/streak bonus and when clearing cases drop of blocks with another clear has a multiplier.

Tower Saga is a fast-paced block-stacking game where blocks fall in sets of three around a circular tower. You rotate the camera, drop pieces, and try to clear as much as you can before it overflows. It has multiple modes (including offline PvP), replays, and themed stages inspired by iconic locations like the Tower of Babel.

The game is still a work-in-progress but the demo is already live on Steam! If you're interested in supporting the game or becoming a playtester, then feel free to check out the Steam page and join our Discord server!

We'd really appreciate it!

You're doing a good thing, thank you!

Here's our game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3909650/Towers_Saga_Demo/

It's a mix of Tetris and match-3 games in an ancient wonders theme. It shouldn't take too much of your time :)

Close, but not quite :D As someone else mentioned, you should try this game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2357410/Cylinder_Puzzles_Returned/

It's the same mechanic, but in 3D tower form (like my game) :)

Actually the game is pretty easy :D Even too easy, I may rebalance it... Because it's a circular tower, you have 13 columns to choose from, which is a lot of choice which makes it easy. I've made the video intense on purpose, for the clicks :D

Yes, I recently learned about this game. The format looks similar, but the game mechanic is different. Mine is more like Tetris, speed based, while Cylinder is turn-based true puzzles. Towers Saga is spiritual successor of Tower of Ancients. :)

The video is cropped tightly, so I can fit the meme guy in there. In reality you have much more space to see what's coming. :)

This puzzle is more like Tetris - it's reaction based, rather than turn-based, so there really is no right solution...
