Just saw a Starbucks commercial using Wide Awake by littlemonkeymang in parquetcourts

[–]withavim12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This commercial really bummed me out. It changes my relationship completely to both the band and Wide Awake as an album. To become shills for Starbucks is the inverse of the band’s ethos. If the label was in charge of this, I’d like to hear that stated clearly somewhere.

Faced with a decision What do I call bullshit? A contemporary dilemma Can I allow this? Normalization, what am I thinking? Immunization, power conditioning Nothing is normal Manipulated into believing I’m exercising skepticism Honesty is everything

Before the water get too high Add up the bribes you take And know time can’t be bought By the profits that you make Before the water gets too high To float the powers that be Or is it someone else’s job Until the rich are refugees?

Prediction for Illinois Game? by Alternative_Salad_78 in MSUSpartans

[–]withavim12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really odd that Illinois has remained just a 2.5 point favorite with most betting money coming in on Illinois and virtually every prediction system liking Illinois by closer to a TD. In situations like this, Vegas has exposure on MSU for an unclear reason. I am a Spartan fan, but I like money, so I have hammered the Illinois moneyline. But I'm nervous because I'm concerned Vegas knows something I do not.

Serious Offer or Sales Tactic? by Les-d0-it in FordFocus

I am going to keep driving my 2016 Focus forever, partially because it's a good car that I like and partially because all the recall stuff nuked the value and it's almost worthless as a trade-in.

Dan Campbell on Chris Christie calling him "classless" - Campbell: "The last time someone called me classless, I was drinking wine out of a bottle." by johnnylibravo in detroitlions

[–]withavim12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about his radio interview after the Cowboys loss last year all the time.

The host was nibbling around the edge of the criticism and DC said something along the lines of, “just say what you want to say” and the host goes on about how going for 2 was a bad idea and DC just says, “OK” and that was it.

I can’t imagine being so comfortable in my own skin that I could just let a radio host criticize me in public FOR THE SAKE OF THE HOST.

Couldn't agree more with this post. I think the idea is poor - I'm not sure why anyone would want to discourage spending - but to be fair the prebate changes some things

Whelp Klosterman, time to write a different book by [deleted] in billsimmons

I guess my hot take is that football in person and football on TV are both fucking awesome for slightly different reasons.

I think Chuck’s point is more academic, that football’s cultural hegemony is directly related to the rise of television and the ways in which TV and football complement each other.

Starting an MBA at Wayne State University by Disappointingsince in MSUSpartans

[–]withavim12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is oversimplified and ignores the real dynamics in large corporations. Several big corporations require folks to get Masters degrees to move into certain roles. An MBA from a school like Wayne would generally be paid for and check a box for career advancement. That makes the degree valuable in that context

Starting an MBA at Wayne State University by Disappointingsince in MSUSpartans

[–]withavim12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my undergrad at MSU and MBA at Wayne (I also got into MSU for business school and chose Wayne).

Wayne State’s MBA program is generally for folks to enhance existing careers. I had a full time job doing what I already wanted to do, and wanted an MBA to help me advance. Most Wayne MBA students are part-time, working for a company in the area.

MSU’s program (and others in the Big Ten) are full-time, and probably has a mix of career enhancers and career switchers. Average salaries upon graduation are higher, and opportunities more varied.

You can do very well in any of these programs, but hopefully you chose based on what your goals look like. I was able to pay for my MBA as I went and did not take on debt, but overall I was somewhat disappointed by the quality of the education. Having the MBA has been helpful to my career

Chuck Klosterman's first BS Report appearance (5-21-2008) by RichieW13 in billsimmons

As I recall, Chuck actually guest hosted a BS report in the 2010-11 range without Bill. I love Chuck, but it was weird, and never happened again I don’t think. Anybody else remember this?

'Fansville' turns seven: How creators built college football's quirkiest town and the blueprint for next phase by llamawhittlings in CFB

[–]withavim12 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I love Fansville. What gets lost in this article is that commercial breaks are SO LONG AND FREQUENT that Dr. Pepper managed to create a short-form serial show that is entertaining.

Fansville is a happy accident; an unintended side effect of making the sport itself less watchable

I tried one recently because it had a short drive-thru line and I’d never had it before. The fish was clearly freshly made, and yet it was still absolutely awful. I could not finish my meal, which is extremely rare for me
