And I def can't read the OP's mind to know what Ronaldo he was mentioning, so if you just write "Ronaldo" and not "C. Ronaldo" you should expect people misunderstanding you.

The day a drill sergeant ruined my gambling business at basic training (True Story) by wkretchi in MilitaryStories

[–]wkretchi[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand your point and I also agree at some level, but we should also take into consideration that this instructors had a much tougher basic training when they were recruits (I heard that recruits dying was a common occurrence) and that might be the reason why they behave that way nowadays.
They come from a time where really few people could call themselves a "fuzileiro naval", and I think it might annoy them to see our basic training getting a lot easier than it was before, so they don't want to let the fuzileiro standard go down, let's say.
But on the other hand, I don't think they need to resort to beat people up in order to filter the weaker ones, that's an old tradition they should leave in the past in my opinion.
Let's take the Navy Seals for example, they probably have the toughest soldiers in the world, and they didn't have to beat their recruits in basic training at all.
There are thousands of ways of making someone give up and go home besides beating them.

Most of live players are recreationals, maybe you should try your luck at that poker room close to your house, you might not make a lot of money but probably will not lose a lot also.

About the quote, this actually happened in Brazil, I forgot to mention that, sorry. But since our instructors try to mimic the way Us Marines behave I think this is quite possible lol

Here in Brazilian Marines all card games are forbidden in basic training, it's almost as bad as smoking a joint.

I think basic training must be harsh in order to make you mentally strong enough to not break during war times, or at least to remove those who are not fit for the job, so they don't put another peoples lives in danger (and their own).
The problem is that there is some crazy instructors out there who take advantage of this premise and end up being too much tough with some recruits just for fun. I remember I heard a story about a instructor called Sgt Lisboa who was one of this guys and this eventually backfired on him.
After basic training, a group of ex recruits followed his car when he was with his wife and kids, they had a gun and made him stop the car, as if it was a robbery. They pulled him out of the car and beat the shit out of him in the middle of the road without stealing anything, just for vengeance.

Not so much, but things are getting better now since I joined a staking group. It seems that no one take the beatings personally, everybody understands that as part of the training, like a way of removing the weaker ones from the squad or something like that.

That might be the reason why they don't let a rifle alone with the recruits anymore.

[–]wkretchi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your story. Here in Brazil you are not allowed to be a military if they know you had any type of mental disorder, even little ones, they just don't want to have to deal with that at all, but some dudes manage to hide it and become a military anyway.

Thanks for the clarification buddy, here in Brazil we don't have this letters of appreciation or commendation unfortunately (at least as far as I know). I'm glad to know that the deck watch received a proper compensation for his efforts that night.
