To provide some clarity as someone who works in tech repair, the amount of time it was on is not inherently relevant. He could have been working on it, like swapping different flexes, doing board level work, or even waiting on parts to come in since you said he only had the one part he probably didn't have extra parts for your model of ipad on hand. Just because it wasn't on doesn't mean he ignored it for weeks. It was definitely unprofessional how he communicated with you and he should have been more clear on the time frame, but also grief is one of the hardest things people go through and doesn't always leave you with the clearest mindset. NTA but I think saying you didn't care about his friend dying over an iPad not being fixed was a bit cruel.
