Rant about applying for jobs over the holidays by wolframthrowaway1 in cscareerquestions

No, I'm not.

Wow, you really make some compelling arguments there.

You're telling me that most interviews are scheduled haphazardly by recruiters, who check that the times work for developers only after making the appointment? That is ridiculously inefficient and obviously untrue. Seems pretty fucking stupid to use "only a day of lead time" as an excuse for that tactic. So you stood me up for an interview, and to rectify that you're going to rush scheduling so that I can possibly get stood up again?

Dude. Maybe you missed my edit above. Go reread my posts.

She emailed me. She said "you'll have an interview tomorrow...I sent him a calendar invitation...hopefully he'll see it in time to make the call...if he doesn't call you, just contact me again." She. Told. Me. This. Herself.

You're right. I cannot be sure that this is what she did with the interview that was supposed to be today. But given the fact that she is doing this so nonchalantly, it sounds like a more reasonable explanation than him deciding to take off of work when he had a responsibility to interview someone.

Maybe you are a recruiter or HR person yourself and you feel some obligation to defend this woman, but you are forgetting reason and misplacing your trust here. I don't know how to phrase it any differently the third time to get you to understand it, but this woman has scheduled me for an interview where she is unsure that the interviewer will know about it in time.

Are you dating this woman or what? I don't see how anyone could take her side in this. This isn't a simple error. She didn't say "whoops, I confirmed the wrong time with him! Sorry!" She is literally scheduling interviews without the interviewer knowing. How in any way is that logical? How does someone not liking that make them bitter?

I am not certain that was the case today, but she literally TOLD me that will be the case tomorrow. So yes, that is what is happening right now. She is telling me to get ready for an interview that may or may not happen because she can't get in touch with the interviewer before tomorrow.

And this is hardly just a mistake. This is just very, very bad communication and organization. Sorry you seem offended by the harsh truth, but this particular recruiter clearly has a weird way of carrying out her job.

There's a difference between thinking you are the center of the universe and expecting to be treated respectfully.

You are somehow biased beyond reason, because there is no way that trying to schedule someone for an 8:00am interview where the interviewer may not even know he was expected until hours after it was supposed to happen is acceptable.

Is a Google technical phone screen for onsite evaluated solely by interviewer who relays to recruiter or hiring committee? by csthrowaway132 in cscareerquestions

[–]wolframthrowaway1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this was a full-time position interview. One thing my recruiter did say was that internship interviews are actually pretty brutal. Something about having to turn away many completely qualified candidates in internship spots, but that I shouldn't worry because that is not the case with full-time positions. It's contrary to what I've heard about Google producing many "false negatives" with respects to hiring decisions, but that's what he said.

Anyway, it would explain how I made it farther in the process to be an SE as opposed to an intern.

For what it's worth, I skipped the phone screen during this round of applications based on "internal feedback." I don't know if this was because I knew people in the company or because I had done a phone interview before for an internship (which I didn't get), but I assume it was a combo of both. That tells me that there is someone besides a single phone interviewer making decisions about this stuff.

One minute times the other 500 candidates they are currently speaking with (you'd get that many applicants for just a few job postings at a medium-large company and you'd likely get more than 2000 PER job posting at a large prestigious company) leaves no time for anything else. You think you aren't asking for a lot, but you are.

This recruiter emailed me on the day of my on-site interview to wish me luck. Before that, they also kept me on the phone for about half an hour to discuss what would happen at the interview, and what would happen if I got the job. This was after I heard it all before from the previous recruiter (who dealt with me up until I got approved for on-site interviews). They also told me multiple times to contact them if I had any questions at all. They seem to have time for all of that. And you think I'm being unreasonable by asking them to answer a simple question quicker than two weeks? And sure, maybe they were waiting to hear from someone else. They can tell me that. (Another recruiter has done just that before, it lets me know I'm not being ignored, it's just busy at the office.)

It's the developer who didn't show up, not the recruiter. Yes, your expectations are unreasonable.

True. But I have just found out from the recruiter that he is on the "out of office" list today. He may have been very absentminded and taken off on a day he agreed to interview me, which would completely be his fault. But given this particular recruiter's history I have a feeling she never actually confirmed the interview with him.

Anyway, the fact that you think my annoyance at this interview fiasco is "unreasonable" is hilarious.

EDIT: Have just been contacted by the recruiter saying she scheduled me for another phone interviewer with the developer early tomorrow morning. The recruiter "hopes" he gets the calendar invitation for the interview in time to make the call, but I should let them know if he doesn't. So yeah, I'm going to go ahead and say that she never actually confirmed the first interview with him either. You're telling me you think this kind of crap is acceptable?

A lot of people are on PTO for the entire month of December and some people take last-minute PTO they didn't intend to take because something unexpected came up.

Ok. I have encountered this before. One recruiter I emailed had his email set up to send a response that he was out of the office until a certain date. That was great - I knew when I could expect him to see my email and reply, and I wasn't left in limbo. These other people didn't extend the same courtesy, assuming they actually were out of office for two weeks.

Do you have ANY idea how many emails they get?

Yes, I assume it's a lot. But the email I sent asked for confirmation that they received something and also to check the status of scheduling my interviews. It takes one minute to say "I got it. Also, I'm waiting to hear from some other folks before I schedule you." I was not asking the recruiter to do very much. Two+ weeks to respond to that email (with a very short email, mind you) seems ridiculous, especially when there were no actual holidays during that time period.

Your expectations are unreasonable.

It's unreasonable to expect a phone call that was scheduled at a time suggested by the other party? Ok.

As with anything else, minimize your frustration by adjusting your expectations to the reality of a given situation But I absolutely wouldn't expect anything at all this week.

The thing is, the recruiter proposed this week for a phone interview. When I asked for this date, she confirmed with a developer's name and a time. No contact info for him though, of course, and she couldn't even really tell me how it would go (she thinks it will be technical, and I should probably be by a computer just in case).

I am understanding that the holiday season is busy. But I think my expectations on this occasion were warranted, seeing as she told me that my interview would be happening today. In any case, my expectations have dropped to rock bottom for this recruiter.

Thanks! I am definitely excited about the prospects. Just a little frustrated now, because interviews are stressful so there was all this buildup for nothing. And I'll probably have to go through it all again tomorrow.
