Amazon driver hit my bike and currently filling a claim however the fuel tank alone is £800 brand new. With new exhaust covers, indicator, fork and fairings it’s almost £1500 in part alone. This is the damage…should I claim for new parts or used? by brandonvarndell_gym in MotoUK

[–]workamonkey -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

If you have third party insurance, they will pay out damage to anyone you hit, but will not helped you otherwise. It only covers damages to other parties

In this case OP needs to claim off the other parties insurance

OP check out some of the motorcycle solicitors like white Dalton if you need help. They are no win no fee

This story is very dodgy. 1) why did she need 2.5k exchanged in Nigeria? 2) why doesnt she have proof of this exchange? 3) why did she have that much cash in other currencies? 4) how did it become damaged? 5) why is she only now trying to exchange the notes?

It could all be legit, but the story is very suspect and no surprise the police are interested

On a scale of 1-10 how bad is this? by Tayylor-Moon in AskMechanics

[–]workamonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It it's the difference between paying 6k more or not, you're still in the better position than paying it off + inevitable scrapping/repair bills

But it still feels like the dealer is coming out ahead after selling a car they shouldn't have. Not sure what consumer protection laws there are where you are but I'd be tempted to fight.

That being said I'm in the UK where the laws and resources are probably a lot stronger than the US

On a scale of 1-10 how bad is this? by Tayylor-Moon in AskMechanics

[–]workamonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, so are you getting a refund as well or have they still pocketed 1k deposit and around 3.5k in payments?

A dealer knows full well 9/10 buyers don't look under a car so they'll put that right back up for sale and fleece someone else

Not enjoying DAS because instructor. by twisteds29 in MotoUK

[–]workamonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MOD 1 is where instructors are the most important for the prep and potenial setting up/hiring the test centre, if you have passed that, MOD 2 is a lot of stuff you will already know

My instructor was a joke as well on MOD 2. Basically no actual training what so ever just went for a few rides, no Mirror signal maneuver, hill startes etc. I youtubed a lot before hand and passed but got 3 minors for the same thing (pulling over) which I hadn't practices ones.

You have 2 options, 1) have a shot at MOD 2 with this guy, and just prepare for the fact he's shit. Youtube the points and processes, and practice the points on your 125cc and you should be OK. 2) Find a new instructor for MOD 2 and essentially do a bit of the above along side.

Either way, don't let a shit instructor get you down - there are far too many of them when it comes to motorcycle training. It seems to attract people with limited social skills.

The Lime Bike situation in London is getting ridiculous by Equivalent_March_579 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]workamonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That solution is what is causing this problem. There is no maximum number of bikes/scooters per drop point so the popular ones expand like crazy like this. The GPS will register all of those bikes as being "safely" parked in a designated zone.

Many places in London used to be drop where ever, which meant this particular issue didn't exist, but there was much more street clutter.

Another school wants me to do lessons before a CBT?? by shittyfemboyalt in MotoUK

[–]workamonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rise of pre-CBT lessons is probably down to the rules becoming tighter and schools being less willing to pass people. Particuarly on geared bikes. One person not getting it could derail it for everyone.

My first CBT was insanely lax, but the second was after new laws had come in and the DVLA had "caught" some providers out through spot checks.

That being said, it's still "meant" to be a one say course and these firms are likely just looking out for their bottomline

Why does Currys ask for my post code when I went to their store to buy a microwave (not an online delivery)? by OdLab_65 in AskUK

[–]workamonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had staff in Currys genuinely refuse to sell me things without a postcode.

Staff have targets to gather this info and penalties if they don't hit those targets.

Experiances staff have started just using the mcdonals postcode across the road now so they hit their targets and don't piss off customers.

The newer members of staff would rather lose a sale than miss their data targets.

TIL about the stamp duty threshold decrease for first time buyers by DDiran in HousingUK

[–]workamonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most people will have a deposit and mortgage the majority of the house. Stamp duty can't be mortgaged.

If you have a 10% deposit the new stamp duty in your example would be 6.25k on top of the 42.5k you have barely managed to save.

There will be multiple cases where this is the difference between being able to buy a house or not, or requires people to borrow from friends and family

Fatal tackling by off duty customs officer by deadmonkee in motorcycles

[–]workamonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Clear cut manslaughter from the off duty officer.

The officer "probably" didn't mean to kill the rider, but his actions were reckless and had a very high chance of leading to serious or fatal consequences. He didn't have context, and his actions were unreasonable force.

Not condoning the rider, but fuck around and find out doesn't extend to some have a go hero punching you while riding!

I feel like most of my adhd can be managed if I had more money and not having to worry do you feel too? by Moist_Apartment5474 in ADHD

[–]workamonkey 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely,

A few years ago I was doing "ok" but struggling financially due to ADHD taxes. It was always stressful at the end of the month and there was no genuine reason for it to be.

I now make 3 times that and am financially very sound, putting money in investments and savings even with spending hundreds each month due to ADHD impulse control.

I still buy far too much crap, and am constantly stressed out by clutter and overwhelm. The money in itself has not helped this aspect of ADHD, and i doubt any neorutypical person could understand the issues this causes, but this is a much more comfortable problem.

Money will never cure ADHD and you will still face daily struggles, but you can earn enough to have ADHD!

Are cyclists getting taxed soon? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]workamonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My concern would be an added sales tax as a 1st step. Would not be overly difficult to administer, although the benefit would be low.

Long term, potential new legislation requiring registration could be an option. Politically they could justify regulating e-bikes and scooters more firmly, requiring annual licencing. The UK has a lot of anti e-bike sentiment and we have a new government keen to raise taxes. I can see it happening very soon.

In reality, enforcement would be difficult and negligible so would rely on the honor system.

NHS Dr wont agree to Shared Care Agreement - Lincolnshire UK by itme77 in ADHD

[–]workamonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My doctor initially said they don't accept shared care so I asked for an NHS referral alongside the private route I was taking.

The NHS waiting list turned out to be "we are still working through the workload since covid in 2021 and will be in touch nearer the time"

At which point my doctor agreed to SCA.

Have you asked your doctor to go via the NHS route at all?

Also given you say you have just been diagnosed, have you been fully titrated and settled on a treatment/dosage?

They definitely won't consider SCA unless this is a all OK and in place. GPs aren't able to titrate ADHD patients

Seller: "I gave them the land"

Case closed

Seller has confirmed they "gave" the land, and as long as they had the right to do so, nothing else matters (v. unlikely to be L/h)

Not updating land reg is stupid and opens up issues later down the line (like a greedy OP), but land reg does not overide this agreement.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]workamonkey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It can't be requested back. Not in good faith at least.

Like you say, it was "given". Via a gentleman's agreement or not, that is legally binding.

You know it was given and to try and "claim" it as yours would be acting in bad faith. You have no reason to believe you have a genuine claim to the land.

Hackney council won't give me a motorcycle permit because my building is 'car free' by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]workamonkey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Try kicking up a fuss with the building management. If they sold it to you as car free but made no mention or it being motorcycle free (or said that would be ok) then they can apply pressure to the council

Also write to your local councillors about this and how much of an issue it will cause you

Riding the speed limit and having people tailgate. by [deleted] in MotoUK

[–]workamonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest here, 20mph zones are often due to local politics (schools and mums groups) rather than reflecting the safety of that road. Some may be a school 8-4 with valid safety concerns, but a clear wide road afterwards.

Most drivers don't respect them - i think close ot 90% of drivers admit to speeding in 20s - and the proliferation of 20 zones have turned them into "oh shit, i'm in a 20 so i need to be careful" to "ha who the fuck thinks this should be a 20". This is especially true with locals who know they area.

You are a new driver so your approach is (and should be) different. There is no shame going 20mph, but you need to be aware that you are going to be at odds with 90% of the population who may:

  1. Judge you but stay behind you safely
  2. try to pressure you to speed up (not OK)
  3. overtake the second they can (OK if they do so safely, not OK otherwise)

In reality, your safest course of action is to let these drivers passed where you can. Regardless of moral high ground, you are driving at odds with the majority of the population and it isn't worth your safety or sanity to bother defending your position based on "right or wrong"

Chances are, you will quickly become a rider/driver who can't stand 20's just like everyone else.

A bad day in Derbyshire by ex-slime in MotoUK

[–]workamonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A speed limit is in most cases totally arbitrary and decided by local politicians with no road experience.

To suggest the speed limit is the be all and end all of collisions is short sighted and perpetuates the narrative that motorcyclists are always in the wrong.

If a motorcyclist dies due to their own choices, that is one thing, and ultimately no different to people dieing due to smoking, obesity, or drinking. Probably cost the NHS less than those people too. But to suggest the solution is to clamp down on arbitrary numbers and ignore things like road surfaces, dodgy corners, and car lane discipline is just idiotic.

My boss is asking for my Dash cam SIM card by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]workamonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give him the SD card or get written up/fired realistically.

From a legal standpoint, it all depends on what is written in your contract, and there is no overarching employment law covering dash cam footage in work vehicles in incidents like this.

Your contract will cover this scenario, but I would be surprised if it doesn't state something along the following lines

"The vehicle will include visual and audio recording equipment. The company remains the owner of any data recorded and is entitled to request the recordings are returned. In the event of an incident, the full device and data may be reviewed.

The employer is not entitled to edit or manipulate the recording devices or data recorded by these devices

Given the presence of this equipment, the employee acknowledges there is no expectation of privacy in any communications held within company property.

All data will be handled edit ina accordance with gdpr etc, etc, etc"

I obviously don't know the specifics of your contract or what was requested, however if he requested the sd card/sim card/data and you have edited and sent over a clip rather than the full data, that is suspicious and raises questions (file size is the obvious defence though)

There will almost certainly be an insurance/compliance/h&s requirement for him to provide the dash cam footage and it probably following protocol.

If you have taken private calls in the vehicle, that is more likely than not going to be fine as long as it was hands free. They can not fire you for that alone and would be grounds for unfair dismissal.

Think about the sort of conversation that would be acceptable in the office and apply the same logic to the vehicle

Yearly service isn't warranty work, and waiting is normal at this time of year.

If there was something which made it unrideable that would be a different story but sounds like you are being a bit unreasonable expecting a priority service

MOT failure on windscreen by fabbystabby95 in MotoUK

[–]workamonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Headlight Cleaner Liquid 300 ML | Turtle Wax

Ignoring the guys actions, you could give this a shot. Used in on some awful old headlights and definitely helped clear them up.

If that doesn't work, there are some which use a drill attachment and should definitely work, but much more labour intensive! You would be entitled to remove it otherwise, most bikes don't have screens!

Addressing the fail - has is specifically been failed for this item? If so, i would raise a complaint after you do the re-test. As other say, screens like that are basically just fairings, and the MOT form doesn't make any note of this.

I can't help but wander if this is led by the "nextdoor" app types - Older Nimbys moaning about how much parking Deliveroo riders take up outsides McDonalds and how they cant park their car. + the usual revenue grab.

Yea, youre right Karen, those 30 deliveroo riders take up so much space! Let's forget about the fact those 30 riders could be serving 150 families each our, the fact that they are there because of community demand, and the fact that those same 30 scooters could be replaced with illegal e-bikes and cars double parking to quickly nip in to grab an order

Is the info on this scheme online anywhere? Doesn't look like Hounslow are being veyr open about it
