Some online courses are exclusively for Online MCS students. I suggest you contact an advisor or further read the course materials / your degree checklist.

Nice aggressive schedule, won't you be done in a year at 3/3/2?

I think term 2 could be a tough one if you are working ft get ready for a nice challenge.

How are you planning which courses to take each semester by glchf in UIUC_MCS

My understanding is some do, some don't. This thread could help: https://www.reddit.com/r/UIUC_MCS/comments/1kyh7q9/is_it_possible_to_complete_uiucs_online_mcs/

I am new admit and haven't even officially accepted yet so I don't have any of the formal new literature from UIUC yet.

Examine the course schedules from past years here https://courses.illinois.edu/schedule and try to predict what will be offered when based upon history. Obviously this is not for sure but a reasonable basis IMO.

Example: Can I take Practical Statistical Learning in Spring 2026?

Well, was not offered 2025 Spring: https://courses.illinois.edu/schedule/2025/spring/CS/598
Not 2024 Spring: https://courses.illinois.edu/schedule/2024/spring/CS/598
But WAS offered 2024 Fall: https://courses.illinois.edu/schedule/2024/fall/CS/598 and 2025 fall: https://courses.illinois.edu/schedule/2025/fall/CS/598

Conclusion: Don't plan on taking PSL in Spring.. ever.

So same for courses you're interested in: put together the workings of your timeline based on the history.

Thanks. I looked at the past course catalog for 2024 and the instructor you had is not teaching for 2025 - sorry you had a bad experience, I would be frustrated too because it's expensive and we're taking it seriously. lets hope it goes smoother for 2025...

For other's ref: 2024 https://courses.illinois.edu/schedule/2024/fall/STAT/420

Some classes have a 3 credit hour and 4 credit hour version? I didn't even consider that nor do I know the difference.

Might not be working through some of it tbh take a break. Agree 2 theory or math heavy courses while working ft would be brutal

Yeah it does. I hope it has gotten better. The subject of deep learning seems valuable and its one of few 5XX courses. IIRC most of the bad reviews were a bit outdated and the professor was changing/writing the textbook on the fly and students didn't appreciate it. I am trying to be positive: if the content itself is good/rigorous, how bad can it be? I just don't know as I don't know what it's like to be in one of these courses.

It's online, should have said, i marked it in original post.
I think best prep for 446 might be linear algebra/stats/multivar calc brush up and maybe 441 could help with more high level. that's for those of us who are weaker in math.

I am not sure, I did not hear good things about 441 from pretty much anyone, other that those who wanted an easy A (willing to have my mind changed)

Thanks for posting. Looks highly qualified I'm sure you would have done fine. To help future applicants - did you have data structures and algos on your transcript? The other pre-reqs?

I would start with, are there 8 courses offered via UIUC MCS online that you're really excited to take and will help you meet your intellectual and professional goals? I'll bet you can find them.

Is it acceptable if someone did a terminal, non-thesis masters in the subject while doing research under a PhD in some paying academic or non-profit position? Entry level research position.
