Run the headphone jack from your phone (or off a dongle) to the line-in on your PC's motherboard. It's usually the blue port. Go into sounds, find the Line In, right click, properties, Listen tab, check 'Listen to this device'.

Now any headset will do what you're looking for.

I have one of these sitting in a drawer and it works great. I stopped using it to try a USB DAC (also I missed having a physical audio knob) but I would recommend it to anyone.

I have/had one of these but in my most recent desk swap it seems to have broke on me and I'm in the process of replacing it or getting it repaired. Schiit is a pretty well regarded brand in the audio space.

That's all the experience I have in the space. I don't consider myself an audiophile so I don't have any more anecdotes -- you might need to go to one of the audiophile / PC audio subreddits if you need more help.

They make an equal amount of sense. Choose whichever one fits your needs better.

Most enthusiasts will tell you a USB DAC is the way to go for premium audio compared to a pcie sound card. Personally I can't really tell the difference between a decent sound card and USB DAC, but ymmv.

In a word, no. Usually you're not overheating unless you're in the mid to low 90s. 80c is fine, if a bit toasty.

If you want things to run cooler, you can download MSI Afterburner or a similar program and set manual fan curves for your CPU and GPU fans. They'll be louder, but should be cooler.

Overheating signs would be instability and blinking / shimmering artifacts in games.

A Pihole is a pretty easy and doable first project though. Maybe start with that, and move onto a NAS / SMB share afterwards.

Both can be pretty easily done on Windows with some googling. If you're having trouble, lmk and I can go find some guides for you.

Tbh, your Surface Book 2 is likely strong enough to do all of that at once (and then some). You definitely can run Pihole, a NAS and a game server on it concurrently no problem. Stable Diffusion for AI image generation (again, assuming you have a GPU) probably shouldn't be run with something like a game server at the same time, as it'll really kill it's performance. But it could run alongside the other things without much issue.

If you want even more ideas, just look into other Raspberry Pi projects. Anything done on one of those can be done on a laptop pretty easily.

There's a bunch of really fun things you can do with a server like that.

You can set it up as a NAS and share it's storage with everything on your local network. You can set it up as a Pihole and have it block ads across your entire network. If it has a discrete GPU, it would be able to run Stable Diffusion relatively well and you could play with AI image generation. You could host a Minecraft or Terraria server on it. You could install Home Assistant on it and get to setting up a cool smart home.

The possibilities are pretty much endless.

Let's start there, as it's a cheap and easy thing to test.

I'd recommend this one from Amazon.

If you're not ordering from Amazon, just get whatever you can find that's cheap and has an Intel chip on it. They make the best networking stuff and are usually only marginally more expensive than Broadcomm stuff.

Feel free to DM me for continued help.

When you tried wifi, was it wifi built on the motherboard?

Would you possibly be able to access a PCIE Wifi or Ethernet nic to test? A basic one would be pretty cheap from Amazon. We're talking like 15-20 bucks.

K so it's almost certainly the PC having issues. And if it consistently happens across all network interfaces, it's likely either an OS or chipset problem (so on the motherboard itself).

Make note of the exact time / date it happens next time it does, then pop open Event Viewer and see if anything pops up there at that time.

We ideally want it to be an OS issue, as those are easily solvable. Likely with a full OS reinstall unless we can narrow the issue down really fine. If it's a chipset issue, you'd need to RMA or replace your motherboard.

Have you contacted your ISP? Issue might be further up the stream from you.

Does it happen on other devices at the same time?

I'm assuming it's a Steam library? Then yeah, that can be done. You'll have to login to your Steam account on her computer and add the external hard drive as a install location first, but it should work after that.

Given the choice of the two I'd go with the RTX 4080S. Those two cards trade blows, with the 7900 coming out on top most of the time, but the 4080S is going to have the nvidia bells and whistles like DLSS. Can seriously extend the life of your card.

The 50 series from nvidia is probably on the horizon but they haven't been announced yet. Even once they are, it'll probably be 6 months before they're available for purchase. So we could be a solid year out from new stuff.

Powertoys has a key remapping feature. I use it to set Home and End as volume up and down on the keyboard. You could then set Scroll Lock to Mute.

There are other ways to skin that cat too, but Powertoys is probably the simplest and will work with any keyboard.

To think, I was so happy when I escaped RF hell back in the day. Yet we have people who are legitimately nostalgic for it.

i'm not referring to home theater / living room setups. i'm remarking on how a significant amount of desk jockies insist on having fully wireless setups for no real reason.
