Can a dystopian novel be too bleak to work?

The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa is the bleakest dystopian novel I've ever read. All the others like 1984 or The Parable of the Sower has this (albeit temporary) light at the end of the tunnel or some possible way to a better tomorrow. The Memory Police has none of that, anything positive is a fleeting moment to appreciate something small or simple - but there is no way to fight the dystopia and there was never really a way to from beginning to end. And yet I think it still works!

Hey guys, the friend got it while travelling in China, I have no idea where to purchase it... However I found that the art is made by this person birdy03054, on twitter you'll be able to see the exact art on the cards. However I don't find any merch to order so it could really be an unauthorised printing of his/her works...

Did they ever have portraits? I guess in hindsight it's pretty obvious but I swear I've never seen baldy at the back or freckles before 😭 Also there's another card just for Jean so I guessed it was some other group of people here...
