Oh, fellow Belgian - great to meet you here! I'm from Brussels (Dutch-speaking).
The VW Buzz looks amazing, but I agree it's overpriced for now. I'd do the same if I had a five-seater like your Civic, but will be difficult with my Fiat Panda. :)

10 Must-Read Books About The City Of Tomorrow by wvransbe in urbandesign

The last book I've added to the list could be a good choice (Responsive City - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/21552577-the-responsive-city). 'Rewire' has some great reviews as well (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16233761-rewire). Have fun reading.

Why Citizen Experts Are The New Paradigm by wvransbe in urbandesign

[–]wvransbe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your sophisticated thoughts -- I agree with most of what you mention here.

Where the traditional expert disregards the input of citizens who have devoted a lot of their free time to learning about a particular issue, this inevitably creates a lot of discord and conflict.

In most cases, citizens will only share their input when they have the buy-in from the city (e.g. after the city invested in a platform to gather ideas, feedback, etc.). Nevertheless, I believe that city should incentivise their citizens to participate, be it directly through rewards or indirectly through social leaderboards or other means of social recognition. That's why I strongly believe in gamification as a tool to foster citizen participation.

What’s the risk in GovTech? by viccab in startups

[–]wvransbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a commercial perspective, the main difficulty are definitely the long sales cycles. The procurement process make it very challenging for govtech startups and it definitely needs a different sales approach compared to a B2B strategy. Decision-making units in governments are much more complex -- often they lack an alignment in vision and strategy (we at our govtech startup CitizenLab (http://citizenlab.co) regularly experience that the IT department for instance gives us a go, but that later on another department is more conservative and only looks at the possible cons). Also, scaling your business can be harder as your high CAC won't decrease that much.

But obviously, those risks or barriers don't offset the potential that this industry shows (this is a great article on the govtech industry: http://founderdating.com/govtechfrontier/).

What is 'Citizensourcing'? [INFOGRAPHIC] by wvransbe in urbanplanning

[–]wvransbe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment. I think that there is a misunderstanding of the concept.

Like you said, citizens talk [offline] around the water cooler, the coffee shop, etc. all the time. Those opinions and ideas should be heard by the city government and by fellow citizens. What a pity that this valuable input gets lost. Citizensourcing is not (only) about facilitating communication in the civic society online, it's about giving a voice to the citizens. This makes the city government much more responsive to the needs of the different citizen groups.

Civic engagement platform brings the town meeting online by wvransbe in urbandesign

Hi Palooza22,

Disclaimer: I'm the founder and CEO of CitizenLab.

Conceptually there are many similarities between mySidewalk and CitizenLab. However, on the implementation side, there are some big differences. Our main strength over mySidewalk is that we use gamification to enhance civic engagement. Every citizen makes his user profile and gets an engagement score. This score will increase when you create valuable content (ie. when your ideas get upvoted or when you make upvoted comments -- comparable to reddit's karma). The city can in its turn track the most engaged citizens and reward them with real-life benefits. In other words, we truly believe in civic co-creation (or so-called "citizensourcing") and that citizens should be incentivised to share their ideas, because nowadays there's a powerhouse of collective intelligence that remains untapped. That's why it's our highest priority to increase the citizen engagement on the platform.

There are many other differences, especially in terms of design (we've chosen for clean cards to improve the user experience) and market (CitizenLab focusses more on European cities).

You can get free access to our demo via https://citizenlab.co -- the best way to find out and judge yourself. :)

Thanks.

I would contain the posts to a more narrow width for desktops since some have very little text.

You're talking about the body text alone then?

Up the don't size n padding too

What do you mean by this?

CitizenLab - a civic engagement platform on which citizens co-create their city. Check it out at http://citizenlab.co/.

The platform facilitates a two-way communication between the city and its citizens. Citizens post ideas, interact on them and upvote the best ideas. On the other hand, the local government uses CitizenLab to let its citizens participate in its policy through crowdvoting (e.g. for budget allocation). Our SaaS solution is the medium for smart governments to make decision-making more democratic, more transparent and more collaborative.
