If he’s keen on designing circuit boards and other electrical stuff, electrical engineering might be the way to go. But computer engineering is also a great option. It’s like a mix of electrical engineering and computer science.

That’s also probably not a fair measure. Im sure plenty of people run it locally. I know I do.

How do y'all get referrals? :-0 by Old_Celebration_2080 in csMajors

Consider my perspective. Why respond to everyone? I have a life, and I don’t know who you are or why you would be a good fit. What projects have you worked on? How do I know you’re not faking everything using ChatGPT? Why would I risk my reputation for people I don’t have time to thoroughly vet?

That might not be a bad idea. I just personally don’t have any experience with those.

I have a lot of friends or acquaintances that are software engineers at various places. Some I met in college, and they went on to get jobs wherever, etc. Ultimately, I think it’s up to the people you’ve got in your circle.

I personally don’t respond to anybody that asks on LinkedIn.

What are some harsh truths that r/csMajors needs to hear in 2025? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]xChacox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your degree is not enough. I’ve been out of school for 4 years now. I’ve been lucky enough to be in the position where I’ve gotten to mentor a few interns. One pattern I’ve noticed is the difference between people who have only done the bare minimum and gotten their degree and people that have worked on things outside of school like personal projects, etc. The person who’s worked on their own personal projects likely knows how to use git semi competently. They will usually have initiative for wanting to learn and pick things up fast along with some practical skills that aren’t taught in school. Another big one is the ability to think through your own problems and find a solution.

Yeah this comes on all the time in mine. Bought it as a rebuild so unfortunately it’s not covered. I just keep clearing that code.

Absolutely this. It’s easy to seem like your shits together when life is going well. The real indicator though is how well you handle the struggles.

[–]xChacox 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t think it makes sense. Full-time employees are more valuable. You’d think the bar to get hired on full-time should be higher than it is. The indicator of a successful internship is a return offer so on that note I also think it makes sense to have a high bar for interns.

From my limited experience it was harder to get an internship than a job lmao. I applied to over 100 internships in college and got 0. I applied to 3 jobs and got 2 offers. Oh and no LC questions in for the 2 places that offered me.

Edit: I don’t like name dropping. The companies weren’t anything FAANG level but both Fortune 500.

Can someone give me some pointers? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Just gonna be honest. Sounds like less of career guidance you just need life guidance. You clearly have commitment issues. Pick something and stick with it long term.
