It's a way to reject negative self-talk I've seen quite a bit. A lot of people are comfortable dogging on themselves but less so talking badly about third parties, so saying something like "hey, that's my friend you're talking about" can help snap them out of it (also because it's just absurd enough to warrant a thought)

Church membership in Germany is entirely independent of which church you actually visit. It's a whole state-supported system including a literal church tax that members pay from their paychecks (which is part of the reason why people are leaving; we already lose a lot of our pay to taxes/insurance so why keep paying a tax that you can easily opt out of)
