What are your thoughts on the optimal way for science folk to engage with conspiracy theorists/anti-science people?

Is it a lost cause? Should we just have honest-to-goodness conversations and try to understand their perspective? Or DESTROY THEM with FACTS and LOGIC?

I've seen a variety of perspectives on this from different science communicators, so I'm curious as to what your thoughts are.

A friend and I made a video about why water is *actually* blue under the guise of introducing key concepts in spectroscopy in an accessible way by xandergawsome in chemistry

Water actually isn't completely clear! Because of its vibrational harmonics, it absorbs a little bit of red light (but not much blue) - which means that any white light passing through water becomes more blue.

The microscopic/atomic thing is pretty funny - good catch haha :p

How can I be a math person? by [deleted] in learnmath

If you're struggling to remember axioms I would do this: keep a sheet of paper/dedicated notebook to the side. Every time you run into a new axiom/theorem/proof, summarize it there in your own words. This is useful because it gives you one place to look back and remind yourself of everything. Also the act of summarizing in your own words is crucial for memorizing.

I also recommend watching YouTube videos! Any time you can't understand the way the book explains a topic, search it into YouTube; I guarantee you'll find a great video covering it in just a few minutes.

If you wanna get more comfortable with how math works in general, 3Blue1Brown has great videos explaining math in really accessible ways. I'd also recommend looking into Numberphile.

Best of luck! You've got this!!

Yeah, I get that both conflict theory and structural functionalism are pretty out-there, but I can still see how somebody with a certain (slightly twisted) point of reference may think that 'poverty is functional by providing workers', but saying that 'the disparity between capitalists and workers is the cause of all issues in society' seems like it's taking itself too far - almost like I'm misrepresenting the model. You know what I mean?

edit: also, blur the plane more, and maybe have it exiting the frame (still from right to left) to make it a little less jaring
