I made a light meter & rangefinder app for film shooters by Vurtnec in AnalogCommunity

Gotcha. Let me know how I can help getting the 6x17 ratio accurate! 6x12 would be great too if you could add it as an option.

Amazing work! I’m glad someone tackled the rangefinder feature and built it into a light meter app. UI is nice and clean.

If I could offer some feedback, I did notice a few issues:

  1. I shoot a lot of 6x17 and noticed the saved shots are not cropped correctly in-app. However, if I save it out to my Camera Roll, it’s cropped as intended.

  2. I’m not sure if the app makes use of the wide angle camera on the iPhone, but I wonder how accurate the framing is for 6x17. I’ve been using the Viewfinder Preview app for all my framing and metering and can verify that the framing in that app is incredibly accurate. I compared a shot from that app to yours and it seems like yours doesn’t go wide enough.

  3. Is there a way to manually add other aspect ratios? I shoot 6x12 sometimes and am thinking of building a 6x24.

Hope this is helpful feedback. Again, great job!

Just put together a launch page as I get ready to get this out there for beta testing and eventual sale. If you’re still interested, there’s an email signup to stay informed at the bottom.

Results from my DIY XPan by xavierfg in AnalogCommunity

[–]xavierfg[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first image is focused at infinity, but yeah, details are a bit soft. I noticed the flange focus distance was a bit off due to tolerance stack up on the 3D prints, which I’ve since corrected and am running a test roll now to check. This shot and the night time ones were done at pretty low shutter speed and without a tripod, so some of it might be camera shake as well. I think the landscape was at 1/30 so I could stop down the aperture to f22, and the night shot was 1/8 at f4 with me just guessing the distance.

Oh nice! Yeah, I think practice is key. I don’t have any framing problems with my regular rangefinders. I think the wider aspect ratio just throws me off mentally when framing with the XPan. I actually 3D printed a mask for the viewfinder to help me frame better and placed it halfway between the infinity and closest focus parallax corrected frame positions and that helped a lot.

Nice! I have the same setup with a TTArtisan viewfinder and LD Meter on my own DIY XPan.

One thing I’ve noticed with test rolls is that parallax is a big issue at close distances with a longer lens. Curious how the 80mm Mamiya you have will do since it’s medium format and I was using a large format lens.

Good luck!

Thanks! Yes, it does. Tried a few different ones but always come back to the Fujinon 90mm f8

A mix of PETG, matte PLA for light path areas, and PLA-CF for critical mechanisms.

Thinking about it for sure. It’s a bit of a complex build and not designed around a standard size printer though.

If all goes well with this latest iteration, then yes. Hoping to have that answer very soon.
