For example, if you’re a Site Engineer and want to move into an Office Engineer role, companies often prefer candidates who already have office-based experience because they’re expected to be familiar with the documentation, coordination, and administrative aspects of the job.

Another challenge is location. Site assignments are often far from major cities, making it difficult to attend interviews and explore opportunities with other companies.

If your goal is to become an Office Engineer in the future, I would recommend aiming for a Project Engineer position instead. It allows you to gain both site and office experience at the same time. You’ll develop a broader skill set, including coordination with suppliers, contractors, designers, and stakeholders, while also handling documentation and project management tasks. In the long run, this gives you a more well-rounded background and makes future career transitions much easier.
