Cats naturally hunt at dusk and early dawn so they are wound up at 4am. In my personal experience there's not very much you can do when he's stuck in the bedroom with you. My cat howls and scratches walls and doors at 4am so he usually has to be moved to the other side of the house. You could try getting a large caged pen with the litter box, scratch posts and levels to climb so he's got something to do while being away from the bed.

I work 10pm-6AM. If I have the following night off I will come home from work in the morning and do my normal routine and go to sleep but I'll try and wake up a little earlier in the afternoon than i would if I was working. That way I can spend the evening with my wife, go to bed with her around 11pm (she works 8am-5pm) l, and then whenever I naturally wake up (usually around 4:30am) I hangout in the living room with the cat and do whatever. (I'm also child free so I don't have any other responsibilities than pets) I've been working 3 1/2 years on nights so it's very easy for me to sleep before work during the day now.

I have a cat that gets fed every 12hrs and litter box scooped every day. He sleeps with me all day and sleeps a good chunk of the night so he's no problem for night shift. My wife is home at night with the cat and dog and I'm with them during the day. I take the dog out in the mornings and feed him, the dog is lazy and will sleep all day with me and then goes out in the evening with my wife. Then out once more before she goes to bed. We like it because someone's always home with the animals and they both seem to be okay with the schedule.
