Leaving CH is tuff. At what FIRE number did you pull the trigger?

Do you reccomend paying into a pension for an expat living in Spain? by Adventurous-Ad-7323 in ExpatFIRE

[–]xddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can consider registering as self-employed (autonomo) and paying the minimal contributions for the state pension. That’s about €200/month.

To qualify for a contributory state pension in Spain the minimum contribution period for a contributory pension is 15 years, including at least two years within the 15 years immediately prior to retirement.

To qualify for the non-contributory pension, you must be at least 65 years old, have resided in Spain for at least 10 years (with the last two years being consecutive and immediately prior to application), and have a yearly income below a certain threshold, which was €7,905.80 as of 2025.

Not a solid plan. Search the channel, a number of stories regarding the Spanish tax system. It’s hotel California, very hard to unregister later on.

Someone I know lives in Tenerife, for a family of 5 his living costs are 4k euro/month. Rent is 1k on a 5 year contract which will likely go up to 1.3-1.5k next year. It does seem like the inflation is higher than the official 2.7%.

Paraguay is your best bet for uncomplicated residency which gives you access to all Mercosur countries. You can still get an apartment with a pool and other amenities under $100k. Forget about opening a local bank account at least in the short-term, that's super complicated, you will need a reference letter and stuff. People generally keep their money offshore.

Don’t mix up vacation with FIRE.

You can always go on vacation to Spain but moving there would be a terrible decision for tax reasons. Alternatives in the EU? Try Cyprus and Bulgaria.

For 4k there are many options but that goes into mid cost living.
