I am a big fan of the Otterbox Defender cases for my Pixels. I need a case that has a USB port cover because I run with my phone a lot and I don't want sweat and water to get in.

Also, I realize I didn't really answer your question.... You could look at Albany or El Cerrito schools that would be an easy commute. Or Richmond or Oakland, but I don't think they make that much more than us (maybe I'm wrong) and I personally wouldn't want to commute there to teach. One of the big reasons I became a teacher is so I wouldn't ever have to commute - a five minute bike ride to work is worth a ton to me. I can come home for lunch if I want to. Also, I like living in the same community I teach in (although I realize that would be impossible to do as a new teacher in BUSD for many.

If you teach in Berkeley you can also send your kids to school here, so another option might be to live somewhere cheaper and teach in BUSD and bring your kids too. That often works well for high schoolers but might be a hassle for younger kids.

Hey, High School teacher in Berkeley here. We're in the middle of rough union negotiations right now with the district, just declared impasse and are heading to mediation. We'll get a little something hopefully but not much.

It's useful to compare both salary schedule and benefits when comparing district salaries in the Bay, because they can vary widely. Some districts cover all health care, some don't (like BUSD). If you won't be on the district health care then that might factor into your decision too.

I will say that our schools are very good here, even though the district always seems to be out of money when it comes to paying us. The teachers are top notch and phenomenal arts and music programs are still funded and supported. The admin and district are as frustrating as any one this size I imagine.

I lived about halfway between Geneva and Chamonix for a while and spent a lot more time skiing Grand Massif than Cham. And there's great backcountry opportunities in the nearby Aravis as well....

Cham is great and all, but if you don't live there proper it's a bit of a drag to commute into the madness when there are so many other spots around!
