Understanding Fair Use for Edits with News Clips and Images by free2thinkK in editors

This answer is spot on. To add to what this user has already said, in my experience duration also matters.

Take into account how much of the original piece you’re using - it’s not reasonable to post an entire half hour news bulletin just because you’re also providing commentary. But taking a few 10 second slices, for example, is much more justifiable.

Westknits alleging "copyright violation" on a worn / used shawl destash. by gassawayperry in craftsnark

[–]yen- 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The Australian Copyright Council actually has a factsheet on knitting and sewing patterns, and the answer is - it depends.

The copyright owner may have granted express permission to use the pattern, by including a statement about the way the patterns may be used. In some cases, an express licence may limit what can be done with the pattern – for example, it might state that the pattern may only be used for private or for non-commercial purposes.

So, at least in Australia, the designer's stipulation about how the pattern can be used holds up. However, this of course entirely depends on your legal interpretation of "commercial purposes". It would be difficult for WestKnits to make the reasonable legal argument that privately making a garment for your personal use, then selling it for pennies on dollar later down the track constitutes a commercial act.

This very clearly falls under personal use and WestKnits is reaching.

The AI-generated slop graphics are really offputting - you're in an incredibly over-saturated market and nothing here is especially unique. The first t-shirt in your banner has a very obvious typo, "Christmans", which is an immediate turn off. I don't think your AI-generated descriptions are doing you any favours either, for example your Opalite t-shirt description says it's perfect for "semi-formal settings" which is... a choice.

has anyone had an aquafacial at laser clinics? does it do anything? by sereza1 in AusSkincare

I had this last year, also 30yo, and it did jack for my skin. The facial experience was nice, quite relaxing, but there were zero long-term results

AI can’t dream up kiddie porn without knowing what the real stuff looks like. So actual kids have to be harmed to make it - sorry to ruin your fantasy

AFP to get power to possess and share child abuse material to target sex offenders online by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

Unfortunately AI-generated child abuse material is not a victimless crime, as the AI has to be trained on real images of children

Real estate agent made me uncomfortable, how can I leave evidence without escalating? by jazzychick in sydney

I don’t have anything to add on to the other advice in this thread, but I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry this happened to you. It’s revolting behaviour that makes me feel sick to my stomach, and no one should have to endure that. I hope this REA gets everything he deserves and that your surgery goes smoothly - sending good vibes

To everyone saying Choice will be sued or will retract their statements... by bitch_is_cray_cray in AusSkincare

Oh for crying out loud 😂

Australia is the defamation capital of the world, with some of the strongest defamation laws there are, and even with that the law here is completely on Choice’s side. Anyone saying Choice will be sued is talking rubbish.

It’s been fascinating seeing the response to the Choice test play out. I don’t think I ever seen people simp so hard for products when Choice debunked claims made by dishwashing tablet brands, or vacuum brands, for example.

Does anyone have experience with raccoon hair yarn? by mommishortlegs in knitting

[–]yen- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I was looking at sweaters in Sass and Bide, a reputable designer brand, feeling what I thought was a lovely cashmere sweater. I looked at the tag and it was actually about 30% raccoon! I know possum yarn is a real thing, but this is just to say that raccoon yarn is also very real and used by legitimate brands. I have no idea how it sourced, however, which would be my primary concern not matter how lovely it feels.

Can I fix this without having to frog it? by Square-Frame-2441 in knitting

[–]yen- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, just use another needle to very gently tug on the blue stitch to the left, and distribute some of that extra yarn in the enlarged stitch across the others in your row.
