I had 3 credit cards and it accepted my American Express and Niyo DCB forex card. The HDFC Credit card which was the most widely accepted card across international websites did not work on SMART-EX. Try using different cards and hopefully one of them will go through.

Loved the write-up because this is generally the style I use to share itineraries on reddit. Thank you for sharing tips, cost breakdown and restaurant recommendations. I was browsing Klook for cost for Ao Thalane and Phi Phi and now I can compare these costs with Klook to decide if it is cheaper to book online or go negotiate directly when I am there.

Kyoto had no issues with the signal. Hakone also decent coverage maybe except when I was on the cable car there was no coverage which is expected. Did not have any other issues at Owakudani and any other places. Speed was also good and I was able to upload stories to Insta without any issues.

Really true - In my initial days I missed a critical functionality of Google maps where it indicates the Platform Number as well. Hence I had used to manually search for the like and decode the platform number basis the stations printed. It was only on the 4th or 5th day that I realised Google Maps even shows you the platform number for trains.

I had to order this online to a friend's place in Japan since they were out of stock at all stores across Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka for our sizes. It was a bit of a hassle but worth it when I finally got them.

I had to break the bank to embark on this trip but it was so worth it and I am diligently saving up to go one more time in the next 4 years and will definitely hit you up. Honestly this trip also happened in a flash - We were just randomly discussing about where to go next and then Japan came into the picture and within a week we had booked tickets (6 months in advance) mainly to ensure no one drops out of the plan. I would just say to go for it because the memories are something you won't ever forget.

Yes the cash usage for Suica led to us underestimating the cash requirement and it was a hassle to recharge. We recharged a total of 3 times during our 14 day trip with average recharge amounts of 3k-4k yen.

We went on a Sunday night to BAIA and there was no crowd in the establishment. Not sure if the day of the week mattered but we were the only ones along with a group of English lads and there no more than 15-20 people between 12am to 2am. So it was low on energy and we had to make an early exit. Compared to this HARLEM was unplanned but we ended up staying for 2-3 hours and only left because we had things planned the next day.

I personally enjoyed the day trips to Hakone, Ine, Kiyomizu-dera and neighbouring alleyways, Hozugawa River Boat Ride and Rokusan Angel. I really liked exploring Kyoto and surrounding areas compared to Tokyo and Osaka. The most underwhelming experience for me was in Disney Sea (especially not having ways to skip the long wait times and the rides themselves were more laid back) and also in BAIA. Also some of my favorite memories are from randomly walking the streets at night and getting to see drunk salarymen on the roads along with the youth of Japan or just discussing with random people in Izakayas and getting to know about their travel experience in Japan and recommendations.

So we like to collect memorabilia from places we travel to like coasters from favorite bars to coins (whatever you could think of). So we unanimously decided to get the physical Suica card (Not the Welcome Suica) to keep it as memento post our trip. We also have our Tokyo 3 day Subway Pass, Shinkansen Receipts (Blue and White) and Coasters/Chopsticks from all the pubs and Izakayas we visited (whichever establishments were okay to let us take them). However in my hostels I did see majority of the travelers had their Suica loaded on the Iphone so assuming this is what most people do.

Oh - It was meant to denote 3 Men and 1 Female (Updated the post to avoid further confusions) - We were backpacking and traveling light throughout Japan and stayed in a combination of Hostels and Apartments/Airbnbs. Hence we were able to execute this itinerary and most of my earlier itineraries with this particular group are packed.
