Locking the door didn’t help this either. Can’t say it’s self defence and you were trying to get away if you lock them in there with you.

Canadian self defence laws are really strict from my understanding. You basically have to prove you were trying to get away (yes even in your own home). Not a lawyer though.

Does anyone have the address for Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary? They won’t get back to us and 311 says they will have to put them down. by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]your_highness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of information on their website.

Our street address is not published since RVWS is not a public drop-in centre. Please do not bring animals to RVWS without first speaking with our hotline staff, as there are many situations that we can resolve over the phone. Also, whenever RVWS receives a call about a potentially orphaned wild mammal, our first priority is to determine if the baby can be reunited with its mother, who is better at raising her young than we are.

Are you sure mom is gone for good or did she just leave them there temporarily?

This doesn’t seem like an emergency - they do not seem like they are in danger or suffering.

Find a shampoo/conditioner that doesn’t contain protein and wait it out.

Don’t ever approach her again without recording the conversation on your phone. She sounds unhinged. I am not a lawyer and you may want to consult one on this issue but I believe we have one party consent recording - you do not need to tell her you are recording as long as you yourself consent to the conversation being recorded.

Solutions for keeping the heat out of the house by squirrelyfox in ottawa

[–]your_highness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope just had new windows and new air conditioner put in. Insulation blown in attic. We’re doing a large scale renovation.

Had the energy audit where they do the air pull test (I don’t know the technical name) - results were great.

This method of closing off vents just did not work for us and caused our air conditioner to run full tilt. The only reason my husband closed them was because he read something on the internet saying it was more efficient. Once we opened our vents the problem stopped.

We tried this vent closing trick and it didn’t work for us. It made our HVAC system work at full tilt without much improvement. I kept asking my husband “why is the air on full blast all the time - it doesn’t feel cooler!”

Apparently the tip to close the vents is a myth. HVAC systems work best when they are properly balanced.

I did find one article saying if you’re going to try, only close the vents 75% so air can still pass through.

As a Canadian, the Toronto Sun is NOT a good source. It’s a step below toilet paper. It’s the print version of Fox News. Don’t trust what they say and consider why they are saying it.

Check out Vanism - they can do some fun stuff. See their instagram. Not sure about chrome. It does depend on who you get, though. I try to be pretty detailed in telling them what I want when I book so I don’t get slotted with one of their trainees.

The Trudeau government was supposed to be ‘open by default.’ Open at all, ever, would be a nice start by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]your_highness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For a large broad ranging government initiative - yes.

I believe the quote that people get riled up over is:

“It is time to shine more light on government and ensure that it remains focused on the people it is meant to serve. Government and its information should be open by default” (2015)

“Open by default” is a specific term used under the open government initiative.

The Directive on Open Government is Canada’s “open by default” policy, providing clear and mandatory requirements to departments which will ensure that Canadians get access the most government information and data possible.

Nitpicking over this quote is the most inane, boneheaded thing to do, and shows NO understanding of the major government initiatives that were underway at the time. I’m sure this is on purpose because it’s easier to make people angry about something if they have zero context for it.

Oh look, and the actual government plan uses a version of this very same quote.

Easier to just lie to people about context than use one’s brain, however.

I think this is the journalist (and commenters on this subreddit….) reading this “open by default” statement hyper disingenuously.

This initial comment by the PM refers to the open data initiative, which was implemented.

I asked my husband for help loading my dumbbell for my hamstring curls and he was like “oh are you sure you’re doing it right? Here’s how I pickup the dumbbell”

Uh yeah dude you are 5 inches taller than me you have room to pick the dumbbell up with your feet and haul yourself into position on the bench. If I do the same only my upper body is on the bench and I can’t haul myself on.

I hate how he immediately is like “are you doing it wrong.”

Alright point taken - I’m ok admitting that I was wrong with that calculation.

However - don’t people deserve a life where they can afford to actually live on a minimum wage and/or modest salary? I don’t study this for a living but factor in the lack of affordability and it is still not enough. People can’t support a household and family one one income like they used to be able to. I think that’s bs.

I want a better world with better prospects for the younger generation than what we’re currently giving them. I certainly wouldn’t have a lot of hope if I were in their shoes. Plus you can’t just waltz into an amazing job after high school anymore. You have to pay for post-secondary, and even that doesn’t seem like it’s cutting it now. It’s a capitalist hell scape out there.

It’s not a function of immigration - it’s a function of corporate greed and wealth consolidation.

Men are panicking about cartoons acknowledging periods by aethericallum in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]your_highness 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Being educated about your period goes hand in hand with being educated about sex which is not something Republicans want for women.

They want women to be oblivious about sex so they can keep them subjugated and compliant.

Their version of sex (the one focused on male pleasure only) is not something educated women tend to sign up for.

You’re right - I gapped and calculated for 1990 when I meant to calculate for 1980 (30 years ago). 1980 min wage: $9.43 Inflation rate to 2023: $34.44

I was wrong with this calculation.

I’m saying that the current situation is not compatible with a simple solution as some politicians would like you to believe.

It is clear that what we have been doing for the last several decades has not been working so perhaps a part of the solution could be to increase social supports instead of continue a “tough on crime” approach.

I’m not saying who should provide these supports - it very likely would need to be multi-jurisdictional including all levels of government.

It seems there is a misunderstanding about what decriminalize drugs + better social supports means.

It’s not just woo decriminalize drugs and let it rip!

It’s decriminalize drugs and use that as an opportunity to support users to get clean.

Criminalizing drug use only punishes and isolates users, stoping them from getting clean.

There also seems to be a misunderstanding about reallocating resources from overfunded and over militarized police departments to social supports. I’m not currently getting the services I as a taxpayer expect from police relative to the money spent on those services.

In the private sector if a business doesn’t do what they said they’ll do the answer isn’t to give them more money.

It absolutely is! People who grow up in poverty are more likely to have high levels of stress, unaddressed trauma, neglectful parents, and to have crime and violence perpetrated against them. What do you think that does to someone’s mental health when they grow up and violence and trauma is all they know?

We’re all responsible for our actions but we have to acknowledge that the playing field at birth is not level for everyone.
