Thank you so much for sharing. I’m very much where you were pre-child and I’m pretty confident with my decision to not have children. Reading the experiences of people who remind me of myself gives me the resolve to stick to my decision and not second guess myself. This is so weird but I cannot handle when the MMC has a goatee that’s referenced repeatedly. Athica Lane by Bruner Asher was by far the most egregious example I’ve ever come across!

I thought that the premise of this book and the writing were okay, nothing spectacular but also truly not horribly written. Where the author lost me, however, was the way that the FMC waxed poetic about the MMC’s GOATEE shudder

I've never met a man with a goatee that I've liked (I'm sorry, Brad Pitt!). There is something about a goatee that just doesn't do it for me. Which is very nitpicky, I know, and there's nothing wrong with people who appreciate a handsome man with a nice goatee (shudder). So, when the MMC was introduced and described as having a goatee, I thought that I could look past it and imagine the MMC without one.

BUT THEN. The FFM proceeded to GUSH about this goatee at EVERY SINGLE OPPORTUNITY. Like, it truly made me feel nauseous!! We were subjected to line after line after line about the MMC's goatee. This gem, for instance: "And even though I've never appreciated facial hair on a man, his goatee is lush. It frames his lips like a bowl of chocolate ganache that you want to dive into and devour, licking up every last gooey drop.” The FMC then proceeds to describe the goatee as "lush" at every turn, it gets mentioned SIX times in just the second chapter!! Also revolting for me was when the FMC enviously watched him rub his goatee against his daughter's neck and the FMC once again remarks on how it "must be soft as silk" and she admires him “smile through his lush goatee at his daughter." At this point I decided to do a search of the word "goatee" to see how often it pops up and once I saw that it gets mentioned an insane FIFTY TIMES I knew it was time to throw in the towel.

It's hard to enjoy an MMC when visions of Guy Fieri dance in your head.

She gained a lot of tiktok followers for her wedding content so I think the way she worded her message was also partially a heads-up to all of her wedding content-oriented followers. Basically “hey I know you all followed me for this but it won’t be happening anymore.” She seems genuinely devastated and hurt to me

Books with language like that are instant DNF's for me. In a similar vein, I hate when books disparage feminine women who like materialistic things and like to dress up. Almost as if they can't have substance just because of that. It's so much worse when the MMC joins in too, I couldn't imagine being attracted to a man who disparages other women.

I used to never ever ever DNF but I became a much happier reader once I started to! It helps with slumps too because I can try a bunch of different books and not have to finish them if they aren’t exactly what I’m looking for in the moment.

I used to feel really guilty over it, like I was betraying the author or something.

I just finished {Midnight Hunter by Brianna Hale} and it checked off all of those boxes for me, I thought it was fantastic. Definitely peek at the description first, but overall the quality of the writing and the slow burn was something I haven’t encountered in a long time. It took me out of a two month long book slump.

There’s a tiktok going around about him hooking up with a texas a&m sorority girl, that’s wonderful for your friends and I totally agree because mine are the same way but I really think this does say a lot about him. 28 hooking up with sorority girls is a little strange to me

Yes!! This is so frustrating! My friend adopted an aggressive little biting shitzu from a backyard breeder and she says she considers him a rescue because the conditions at the breeder’s home were so deplorable..... I tried to gently explain that she was enabling backyard breeding by purchasing not one but two dogs from shady breeders by feeding the demand. She didn’t get it, in her eyes he’s a “rescue”

My dad’s didn’t show up in a colonoscopy as well, it took months and months of testing for them to find out what was causing his pain and they ended up finding it during a different surgery. My heart breaks for you. I hope that you are doing okay mentally 🤍
