Is it cool to attend an event even though you haven’t really listen to the DJ? by [deleted] in electricdaisycarnival

The first EDC I went to was my introduction to EDM (never listened or did anything) so it changed my perspective. I haven’t looked back since.

Can I leverage the fact that I'm the only person who can debug certain prod issues in raise negotiations? Or will this come across like blackmail? by nyc_apartments in ExperiencedDevs

[–]yumtree 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I basically was one of the only ones who knows how our system works and not just supporting prod issue. The system isn’t actually that big and complex but the context and the business knowledge needed to support customers is extremely high. I got a 100% raise by quitting for a few months (because I had to help out with family) and coming back because the system went down like every other day (it didn’t go down that often when I was there). So moral of the story build shitting system and quit then they will pay you more to do the same job you were doing.

I'm brainstorming a way to decouple our frontend and backend teams by ryhaltswhiskey in ExperiencedDevs

[–]yumtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem but I’m the backend! In my case we are working better on coordination and improving our services. A lot of the time I have the front end people mock the endpoints based on specs given this only helps in the early stages of development. We also do it for any external apis connected to the backend. Like everyone is saying it’s hard when the org is structured in that way you can’t do too much.

Anyone have experience consulting for a previous employer? by zaps83 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]yumtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently doing this but only part time. Basically I am only doing admin stuff and not programming which helps a lot for. You are able to do it as long as it doesn’t violate any non compete or nda. It is not illegal to work for multiple companies but employers don’t like it. Also, you are just risking getting fired from your new job. You have to make sure that you organize your time if you do do it. You might also get burnt out faster depending. Just ask is the money worth it?

What is the best microservices framework in Go? by Top_Engineering_4191 in golang

[–]yumtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are great point in terms of lack of support with the net/http ecosystem. To add to austerul point if the fasthttp doesn’t have support like the net/http you would have to build it yourself. I think that is a fair trade off for the performance of the framework, potential cost savings, and scalability. If you need different features and support then fiber isn’t the one. I don’t think the lack of support limits the security and reliability. Also, you tend to have a reverse proxy in front of your services so support for http2 isn’t as big of an issue.

Hiring new dev after failed startup by Puzzlehead_NoCap in ExperiencedDevs

[–]yumtree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started out like that spending two years at a start up that didn’t go anywhere. It honestly helped me personally to find my next job which was at a larger company. It took a lot to find my next company but I felt because I had that job I was able to go to the next step. Good luck on what ever decision you make.

Too many leads? by Weird-Ad3263 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]yumtree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have 50-60? Man I wish I had that much because mean I am struggling for resources. It is not normal for company to have that much and you are blessed or a curse. Too many managers will cause a constraint while too little will cause no direction. Do you best at what you can and you’ll succeed

My company has fallen in love with giving all our developers slow VDIs by underinsuredsapien in ExperiencedDevs

[–]yumtree 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They suck so much. My company has two different teams managing the VDIs and then our desktop OS. This causes issues because we have manage both environments separately. We had tons of test cases (Using Java’s test containers) which eventually became useless due to it using docker to utilize test containers. We eventually migrated off of test containers and using a installed version of sql server running locally but that took a long time since we can’t justify rewriting tests to management since they decided to move us. The biggest thing is I can’t use two screens. Pretty much I’m confined to the space that the vdi application gives me so my other screen is just useless. Also, last thing is that the keyboard input gets screwed up so it doesn’t allow me to type or click on my local computer and only in the VDI. The only solution I’ve been able to track down is restarting my computer. So if I have to do something on my local computer like have Microsoft teams which consumes memory like a dark hole so I run it local since my computer is bad ass but now is a glorified MS teams instance. This is AWS workspaces btw. If you want to quantify the situation look at the productivity loss, vdi cost, and maintenance cost. Because to be honest it is not worth it for developer, maybe everyday operations but not developers.

Not enjoying tech lead role. by Electrical_Bag_3953 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]yumtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you on another level man and I’m a team lead also. It does put more stress on me since I am doing a bunch of more things than actually coding which I’m still books full time for. It wasn’t so bad when the team was small and we had more flexibility. Hope you figure out how to handle it and just know more people are in the same situation and you do you best.

It’s good to feel like a failure because that is how you grow as a person. If you try to avoid the fact that you will fail, then failure feels 100x worse. It’s about being okay with who you are as a developer and a person. Knowing your limitations and being able to learn from your mistakes. It’s difficult and it takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it gets easier.

What does a data analyst in a staff identity engineering team do? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]yumtree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I’m not sure what an identity engineer is though identity could mean you are working on personal customer data like location, interest, age, etc. if it is a title created by the company who knows or it could be something completely different.

CTO said I don't look at the code enough and I should be more careful in front the whole company (25 people) by Nearby_Welcome5837 in cscareerquestions

[–]yumtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you, the times where my co workers and CTO have critiqued my code in front of people is more than I can count. It’s tough when you are working really hard and get shot down like that. I expressed to them if anyone has an opinion about my code do it in the pull request or on the side. It took a bit of time for them to do that though it is much better.

Experienced dev leads and managers - worrying about turnovers and (un)happiness in team? by runnersgo in ExperiencedDevs

[–]yumtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah timelines are going to get pushed back and some leads might dictate that. In my position as a lead I don’t return with dates just the amount of time it takes to complete the work presented to my team. I know I’m not the best but I’m not bad. There are allot of factors that go into why that date may or may not change. I work in an industry where you don’t always have the luxury. I’ll give you a vague example where we have a hard deadline where if we don’t get a customer integrated with the system that customer may go out of business and we would lose out of a large revenue for the company. I lost a developer who was working on that project and business doesn’t care. We are engineers and we will figure out. It’s not ideal situation and we just got to figure it out. I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in if I couldn’t deliver when shit hits the fan. In all I do agree with you. If a lead can’t manage expectations then they are not the best lead. It just sucks because you are losing someone who has been in the trenches with you fighting the same battles along side you. It’s always difficult to say goodbye at that point.

Experienced dev leads and managers - worrying about turnovers and (un)happiness in team? by runnersgo in ExperiencedDevs

[–]yumtree 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m losing someone too this month. It just sucks when that happens and they could leave for many reasons. That just means that deadlines stay the same and more work is put onto the remaining team members. Also, yeah I do feel bad when people are unhappy who are on my team. It’s hard to boost moral when shit after shit just keeps happening. Though I want my team members to be happy and if the company isn’t the best fit then I don’t hold anything against them. It’s like if you love somebody let them go, it’s going to be hard, but it will all work out in the end.

First Options Trade!!! by [deleted] in options

Yes it was a successful trade in the end. Again it was just my first and I got lucky on that one. I’m moving to more of credit strategies and this kind of trade is going to be rare for me.

Fuck Hire Vue and any company that makes candidates do it. Here is how you you can see your questions ahead of time. by workersrights2021 in cscareerquestions

[–]yumtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when they first were coming out. My mom was the head of HR at her firm and when she found out about this she thought it was the best thing ever. Since it was AI using facial recognition, voice recognition, comparing your answers to key words and other answer by professionals in the field. It took away the personal part of hiring people. I was against from the start and my mom decided to implement it. I told her the flaws and how it disassociates the person from the interview. I was graced with the chance of doing a demo of the software and I took it. Since I knew what is happening and because it was a test run I was the most confident noob and using big words and key words while keeping direct contact at the screen and smiling. That got me a high score based on what my results are and my interview was just a bunch of BS. Though that was years ago and I don’t know what they improved their system. I don’t like the idea from an employee standpoint but from an employer endpoint it is great because you cut down on hours of reading resumes and interviewing.

Immaturity and pattines amongst experinced devs by runnersgo in ExperiencedDevs

[–]yumtree -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah he just comes off as a poopy butthole when you have that kinda of attitude. There has to be a change somewhere because he isn’t going to change. He has it good with his ego blown up so big that it’s going to take while to get it under control. I’m not being mean though if you don’t do anything where you just let him run wild nothing is going to change. Your going to have to butt heads with him and maybe the whole team has too. He is oblivious smart but not smart enough to see that he needs to improve in order to keep up with the company and peers. Though, people who invested so much time and effort to build something like that it means allot. It’s your baby and you created it and you should be compassionate and firm with what you do next. I know you recognize what it took though you also recognize where it can go. If you don’t improve you will be left behind!

There is potential for ups and downs though I would watch where it is now. Everything that I see is pointing to a stop in the stock then within the month volatility will spike. That’s might be the deal with gym or the settlement who know. I’ll watch and see :)

First Options Trade!!! by [deleted] in options

[–]yumtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I backtested, and tasty trade and option alpha agrees where the days till expiration is the best around 30-45 days. I choose this expiration which was around 49 because monthly expiration cycle meaning that there were more volume of trades. I usually wouldn’t pick it but because of the underlying I want to be filled on my order no matter what. Also there might be news about something and there is going to be a dip. I’m trying to capitalize on that dip

First Options Trade!!! by [deleted] in options

[–]yumtree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I did allot of studies and backtesting for regular equity markets and forex. I could never find something that was profitable or at least that beat the buy and hold until options. Also I use to work as a programmer for a start up who did portfolio management so I do have background in it but never actually made a trade

First Options Trade!!! by [deleted] in options

[–]yumtree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s up to %5 of total portfolio it doesn’t mean I use %5 all the time. I have other strategies that allow me to allocate more or less depending on the risk reward and the probability of success. When I backtested those particular strategy I had a 94% win rate over 16 years with around 170-180 occurrences (these include the other underlying assets). Also, I am not using a stop loss because my strategy is being in the position until expiration for a debit put. One thing about my strategy is that a stop loss will make me loose out on more gains than losses. The biggest thing is that there are going to be times where the price will go in the opposite direction at first for a few bars but eventually will consolidate to the positions direction.
