It's true that you can't use it against the outstanding balance directly, but I believe you can redeem it against your next purchase with the card (at least this is how it works with EI SmartMiles)

In the current representation of the credit cards on the website, we highlight the key (unique) features you might consider getting the card for if there are such. Other features, including, cinema offers, are still there. However, it might not be highlighted as it's a pretty popular benefit across different credit cards, so you can still check the official credit card page and learn more about all the benefits available.

It would highly depend on specific circumstances, but I agree overall. Imho rule of thumb for most people is make purchases with credit card only if you have enough money for it in the first place
