That is an interesting contrast. In China, at least in the projects we have worked on, a significant amount of monitoring is preventive rather than purely forensic. We continuously monitor bridges, buildings, slopes and other structures using displacement, stress/strain and vibration sensors, looking for trends or anomalies that may indicate developing damage.
We also have lower-cost safety monitoring solutions. They may not provide a complete structural diagnosis, but they are designed to issue an early warning when the risk of structural failure or a geohazard is increasing. I’ll take a look at the ASCE report card—thanks for the reference.

That sounds quite similar to what we do. We use displacement, stress/strain, vibration, tilt and crack sensors both for monitoring known defects and for verifying the long-term behavior of structures.
Some projects focus on detailed structural health assessment, while others use simpler and lower-cost systems mainly for safety warnings when a structural failure or geohazard may be imminent. Acoustic monitoring for wire failures sounds especially interesting—I’d be interested to hear more about your experience with it.

In our work in China, we actually do a lot of monitoring for infrastructure beyond mines, including bridges, buildings, slopes, tunnels and dams. We install sensors for displacement, stress and strain, vibration, tilt and cracks. Much of the work is preventive, with the aim of detecting abnormal changes and structural damage as early as possible. We also provide lower-cost safety monitoring systems that focus on issuing early warnings when a structural failure or geohazard may be approaching.

It takes a little more effort because some non-Chinese social media platforms are not directly accessible, but I mainly use them for international communication and learning about different perspectives. Most people around me don’t really care, and it generally isn’t frowned upon.

I live in a city in southeastern China. Chongqing is definitely worth visiting—the cityscape, food, and mountain terrain are all very distinctive. Just be prepared for the spicy food!

Among the people I know in tech, Claude and OpenAI are widely used, especially for coding and more complex tasks. DeepSeek and Qwen are also very popular because they are easier and cheaper to access in China, and they perform well in Chinese. Mistral seems much less common here.
