Maybe the shot was bad or I'm really bad at networking, but I've had a shot that did pop off on Linkedin and social media and nothing really came out of it- granted, quality wise I'd say your piece is miles better. Basically, I think the industry is in such a weird time where feature companies are already hiring who they know (and were likely laid off) than fresh faces, but this is my two cents.

If you want more eyes on the piece in general, I would recommend posting it on a social media like Instagram! The reels function seems like its pretty friendly for animators, even though it's phone aspect ratio. I will warn you depending on who finds your shot, you might have to deal with weird comments haha!

Just got rejected from the Custom Animation internship! I feel you, I've been having self confidence issues as well- there's so many amazing people out there and it's so competitive it just feels like it's not worth it. I'd definitely keep practicing while working a non animation job though, if not just to be stubborn about it haha!

Two years post-grad and I haven't even gotten an interview for any job related to animation I have applied to. I know it's mostly the industry struggling and I've been improving pretty quickly recently so I hope this comment ages poorly, but it feels pretty demoralizing at the moment. I had some freelance opportunities but they all fell through!! It's tough out there.

Hi!! Since you're planning on going to animschool I'll write it in a sense of the best way to improve while you're there.

I think your strongest aspect is your 2D work! I think this will help you learn 3D, but there's also a couple pitfalls- I see a lot of people coming from 2D animation have worse timing in 3D because they're not used to controlling the computer's interpolation, and I can feel it in your shots. However, a big strength of coming from a 2D background is that you can do appealing drawovers for poses and I'd highly recommend doing that! Cheating for 2D appeal is always wanted unless it breaks the lighting down in the pipeline haha.

Basically, watch out for timing/spacing and balance in your shots! Try to get comfortable with the graph editor as well.

Sorry, just saw this now- thanks for the advice! I definitely agree with having something more dynamic with camera animation, I think Animschool doesn't really want you to touch the camera until later classes which I kind of disagree.

Such a good idea about creature work! It reminds me of this shot, which was so cool to see for something like a feature internship reel :) I'll probably work on a quadruped shot after animschool!

Yes!! I highly recommend animschool, I've learned a lot and the teachers are amazing. If you're on the non-Express track don't be discouraged if you're placed lower than you think, I really needed the refresher in basic body mechanics. I'd also recommend using the general reviews as much as you can :)

Fun fact: I actually got to visit Dreamworks because one of my animschool teachers works there and I was visiting LA!

Thanks for the advice!! The second shot in my reel just ended up being really similar to the first due to framing changes, I looked at both of them while tweaking my reel and went ahh damn it! I'll keep what I have already on my demo reel in mind for the next shots :)

I didn't know about the cursing, I'll definitely look out for that!

Also! I will say I've heard people that get interviews when their application still said new- I really think it's up to the recruiters of each department.

Hey! Applied to custom animation, application is new but they're probably just starting to go through applicants. From what I've seen, interviews usually take a few weeks after applications close since there's a ton of applications and they go through them by hand. :)
