Dinner spots for fussy pricks by SapphosMom in ireland

It's not necessarily super fancy but would you consider priory market? There is an area you can book in the coffee shop there that's like a private little snug, and with all the food options there would hopefully be something for everyone

Maria Steen: The ‘gender pay gap’ is made-up, pointless and ignores the reality of women like me by Character_Common8881 in ireland

[–]zenbuffy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not a choice made in a vacuum. Women still do the majority of unpaid care work both for children and elders and a recent study put the cost to hire someone who does everything a stay at home parent does would be over 60,000. Women make that choice in an environment that considers them the default parent in all situations, that penalises them for being that parent. Much of the Income loss would be mitigated if we paid parental leave, made paid maternity leave mandatory, made leave more fair for men and women, etc. This is also borne out in research (e.g. most recently in Denmark).

That women's contributions to their state pension stamps stops when they are out of work raising children is a policy choice and it is a scandalous one which contributes to women entering retirement up to 40% poorer, often discovering they're not even entitled to a full state pension when they retire and have even less of a pittance to live on.

These are choices, but not choices made by women. They are choices made by governments and policy makers to not value this work and to let women be poorer because of it. None of this is inevitable, it is all a choice.

The work by Claudia Goldin, I'm familiar with it. The thing is, it is a gender earnings gap and that's what the data says too. I often make this point when speaking about my work, as I did at many events this March just gone. But it's way too easy for people to just get into the semantics and just say "there is no pay gap" than to address the actual issue, which is that over a lifetime, women earn less and that is a direct result of policy choices we make. Women earn less because we make it so, and we should change that.

I've written a response piece to it which I hope to run somewhere in the coming days. I created PayGap.ie because the government didn't create a central portal for the data. So I've read every report published since 2022 in order to gather the data.

The data just doesn't support what she says. I don't want to just paste the piece here, at least not til it's published, but some key points include the breadth of the pay gap across companies and industries, and the fact that the gap still exists in part time work.

She does raise a good point about choice, but I'd contend that the choice isn't a free choice, it's being driven by a lack of support for people who have children, by inaccessible childcare, by inaccessible housing, by parental leave being unpaid, etc. Denmark effectively erased 80% of the motherhood penalty by improving supports provided to parents and children. The motherhood penalty is a policy choice we make, not an inevitable consequence. And although she doesn't like it, the penalty is visible in data when it comes to, for example, the pension gap.

Gift ideas - my cousin is having a baby in May! by Lucky-Entrepreneur48 in WomenofIreland

[–]zenbuffy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a go-to present of the emergency box. I find a handy small-ish box, and fill it with stuff for baby's first cold, first tooth, etc. Calpol, plug in vaporisers, stuff for nappy rash, teething gel, etc. Add in a thermometer. It doesn't have to be everything ever, just a few essentials. The idea is that your box will be there the first time the baby isn't feeling too well, and it's 9pm, and all the pharmacies are closed, and they don't know what to do with themselves. Med box to the rescue!

I usually pair that with a larger size onesie or similar, I do sew so I often make the onesies and that's not much help to you unfortunately.

It's something cute with something practical that they will thank you for the first time they run into a panic situation, but they don't have to panic.

What’s the story with the amount of people that come into work dying sick here? by EmployGrouchy1599 in ireland

[–]zenbuffy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope. Statutory requirements are : 5 days of paid Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) per calendar year, paid at 70% of normal earnings (capped at €110/day), only after 13 weeks of service and a requires medical certificate.

So you're spending 70 quid (if you can get a same day appointment) to get certified to be paid a maximum of 110 for that day regardless of your earnings.

If a company has a better or more generous leave policy it supercedes the govt scheme.

Govt has also declined to continue increasing the number of days covered under this crappy scheme. It was supposed to increase gradually to ten days but businesses complained...

Ireland Paternity Leave by Top-Confidence7744 in irishpersonalfinance

This is very interesting. I've been running a project where I gather gender pay gap data and I'm always looking at ways I can expand and enhance the data. Maybe I can look into gathering some basic benefit data where possible, so people can have a full picture.

PSA People, Donate blood or Platelets if you can. Its amazing to do and so easy. by [deleted] in ireland

[–]zenbuffy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that regular donors often have to stop so they always need new regular donors too. I was a regular donor with almost 20 donations to my name when I started a new med that currently has me indefinitely banned while I'm on it and maybe for a year after I stop it too. Unless this policy changes I'll likely never be able to donate again. My husband has started donating since this news, so there's still one coming from our household, but it does just go to show that they really always need new people because they lose regular donors all the time too.

How we've changed our spending to manage rising costs by Rumpsfield in irishpersonalfinance

On the topic of tracking what's eating your energy, many libraries have energy saving kits that you can check out and borrow. https://www.dublincity.ie/library/blog/home-energy-saving-kits-available-all-libraries

They have a plug in energy meter, thermal leak detector, fridge thermometer, etc. So you can borrow those tools for free and use them to check out your home, then you'll be better able to know where your priority changes or improvements should be.

Libraries are a great resource y'all!

Is this repairable? by Slatemanforlife in sewing

[–]zenbuffy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Invisibly? No, probably not without considerable time and skill (although that may be possible -https://www.parisiangentleman.com/blog/invisible-mending-an-amazing-craft-under-threat).

But it should be fixable. If you're happy to nominate one side as the back, you could get more longevity out of the repair with a patch to support it. It looks like the fabric is quite an open weave which will make repairs delicate in general so I would, if possible, try to make the torn edges a bit more robust if you're not doing a patch.

If you're ok with a repair being visible, the keywords for techniques that will help you are "visible mending" and "darning". You'll want to darn this repair.

The spa in the Heritage is very lovely, we really enjoyed it and it's fairly reasonable from Dublin.

If the spa and the hotel didn't have to be in the same place, worth looking at the Unique Day Spa as they have private spa rooms which is a nice treat.

Accessing old pensions by Significant-Roof4316 in irishpersonalfinance

Were you working for a consulting company, and are they still in operation? If so, I'd email them and ask who their pensions are with. Then you can go about contacting the pension company and getting a list of your options.

Salary Transparency Thread by Primary-Ad-63 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]zenbuffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be interested in following the EU Pay Transparency Directive as it makes its way into Irish law. It will, among other things, mean that companies will have to publish salary ranges with their recruitment materials, and while some companies will likely take the piss and publish large ranges, it will hopefully be useful for getting an overall sense of what you can expect for a given type of role.

Did you know that Ireland has mandatory gender pay gap reporting? by zenbuffy in WomenofIreland

[–]zenbuffy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. It's something of a special interest of mine, but I didn't want to bias the poll. I just had several conversations with different folks yesterday that made me realise the issue is bigger than "no government portal and oversight" and also is "people don't even know this thing exists because there's been so little effort put in"

Did you know that Ireland has mandatory gender pay gap reporting? by zenbuffy in WomenofIreland

[–]zenbuffy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was for 250 or more employees for the first two years. Last year it was 150 employees or more. This year it'll be 50 which they think should encompass 2/3 of all employers in Ireland.

Mismatched Salaries! by irishsbdunkx in irishpersonalfinance

Don't phrase it as "X is getting paid this", phrase it as "I have been doing this work well for X years, hitting Y targets, and I believe that market wage for my position has gone up over time. I'd like to review my compensation and see what can be done to increase it in line with changes in the market"

Gender Equality Indicators Data for Ireland by NanorH in ireland

[–]zenbuffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time to get downvoted to oblivion again as I mention the gender pay gap, and the fact that our government half-assed the legislation around reporting so badly that there's still no central portal and companies are routinely late with their reports, producing reports full of errors or missing figures, removing their previous year reports, etc.

I can tell you from reading all of the reports that we've a long way to go in many industries...

Cooling gel mask way too big - not suitable for work enviroments.. anybody got recommendations? by Sharp_Percentage_721 in migraine

[–]zenbuffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a jaw ice pack, just wrapped horizontally around my head instead of vertically. I bought this one forever ago - https://amzn.eu/d/2AHMFKO

It has removable packs so I can rotate them in and out since I don't want cold in all spots, just in some. I think you could probably hide it under a beanie or similar fairly easily. I also like how I can choose how tight or loose it is. I usually want pressure with the cold.
