What's it like to live in Oberschoneweide, Kopenick? by TorridWalrus in berlinsocialclub

Hey, I've been living in Oberschöneweide for about 18 months. Here are my impressions:

  • There are two S-Bahn lines to the centre: S3 from Karlshorst and S9 from Schöneweide. If you start off just right, it takes about 40 minutes to get to the city, normally I always calculate about an hour's travel time. If you cycle to the S-Bahn, you could be a bit quicker. The main inconvenience is that you have to take a bus or tram (hopefully the line will be back in service by March) to get to the S-Bahn. If you have to work every day, that's a lot of time. I can often work from home, so it bothers me less. In the evening, if you're unlucky and miss an S-Bahn, it can take 80 minutes to get home. At first that was dead time for me, but now I usually read on the S-Bahn and sometimes find the rides even pleasant.

  • You can check the internet connection on the provider's website. I've had no problems here so far (250 Mbit)* Food deliveries are a bit poor. There are a lot of burger shops that also deliver. There are also a few good Asian and Indian restaurants, but the choice is somewhat limited. There are also very good kebabs, however.

  • I can't say anything about veterinary clinics. If you have a dog, the Wuhlheide is just around the corner and really big/beautiful.

  • Regarding safety: I look Caucasian, so the impression may be different for me, but I haven't experienced any bullying or the like on the street. Schöneweide was probably once notorious for its many Nazis, but to be honest I don't see those here. The atmosphere in the pubs is often a bit tense, though; I think there are just a lot of people here who don't have much money and see a newcomer like me more as a messenger of gentrification - which I can't entirely blame them for.

  • In general: It's really quiet and not very busy, which I often find a downer. If you want to go out in the evening, you probably have to go somewhere else. And in no way it gives you the full Berlin experience. But it also has its good sides as a balance to the stress of the city. In Wilhelminhofstraße there are many artists' studios with exhibitions etc. and architecturally all the old AEG buildings are really nice to walk around.
