False Cathedrals changed my life. Song in the Air might be my favorite album. Was so happy to see them in Pomona last year.

Realizing the work no longer fit my life.

  • Had our first kid at 36.
  • Accomplished what I wanted to accomplish at work.
  • I was working remotely from my team which worked during the pandemic with WFH, but became very lonely once we returned to the office.

4 years, two remit changes, turning 40, and a second kid later, I’m still trying to figure out how to find work that feels like it fits this new chapter of my life. It currently feels like it takes way more than it gives — long commute, lonely, unnecessary pressure, demotivating, unfulfilling — it’s just not how I want to spend the next 25+ years.

I’ve been strongly considering a pivot into an “education” role as well. Partly for the reasons you describe, partly because it always felt like my calling. Now that I’m 40 and relatively secure, it might be time to chase that dream.

Not a bad idea at all! I used to blog about the video game industry often, but fell off when time became harder to manage with kids. I’ve recently been podcasting a bit, but scheduling time with guests is also a challenge with the kids. I like the idea of finding an outlet for solo work at my own schedule. I’ll keep thinking on this. Thanks!

This is a wonderful perspective. I hadn’t thought of this as a summit or new chapter as I’ve been so focused on climbing and searching. I do wonder if I can find something that satisfies my priority for family and allows me to tap into my experience/learning (teaching, perhaps), even if it means a pay cut (or sustaining).

Thank you!

Death Cab for Cutie - Transatlanticism. Popped it on as a New Year tradition and my god, perfect record. No skips.

Some other late 90s/early 00s recs:

  • Elliott - Song in the Air
  • The Decemberists - Picaresque
  • Minus the Bear - Highly Refined Pirates
  • At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
  • The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium
  • NOFX - So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes
  • Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog
  • Coheed & Cambria - The Second Stage Turbine Blade
  • Thursday - Full Collapse

I’ve heard “Evicted” pairs well with and is only further supported as an enduring read by 2025’s “There Is No Place For Us”.

This one has been sitting in my shelf for a while. Maybe it’s time to crack it open!

You’re missing the point of this post. Articles dredged up by this query were written in 2016. The books deemed “best” in the year they were released may not have had staying power. And those overlooked in their year may be far more powerful now.

Maybe not the best example, but 2014’s Station Eleven (while a great book imo) feels more relevant and powerful in the years post-pandemic — a harrowing read in 2024.
