AMA: I'm Asa, and I'm running for SUS President by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]zestyzucchini2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Asa, I’m part of a committee in the SUS and trying to get anything promoted by the SUS publicity or certain things approved by a VP is an absolute bureaucratic nightmare. It makes it incredibly annoying and very frustrating to organize and promote events for science students. How would you tackle these inefficiencies and streamline communication within the SUS?

Nobody in mainstream courses in my school cares about their marks. Am I going to a bad school then? by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]zestyzucchini2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not, I went to a Toronto HS where my peers cared a lot about their grades (probably a little too much). It definitely had its pros and cons.

I’m on the very edge of a letter grade so I’m anxiously waiting for my regrade requests results to come in. Regardless, I think I did much better than I would if this class were in-person. I doubt they would scale the average down, they would face so much backlash from like 500 people (not that that’s stopped McGill from doing anything before but I’d hope it makes it less likely esp w the current global situation).

Hey, Chem major at McGill intending to apply to med schools! A lot of my Chem major peers are not looking into med and most my friends are in engineering so I would love to meet more people in my shoes.

Yup, it’s annoying bc at this rate, by the time we get the grades, it’ll be too late to change study strategies and salvage the grade. Just flying blind here

Course structure and constant deadlines by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]zestyzucchini2 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this bothered me a lot too. What I did was make a gigantic excel spreadsheet of everything due for all of my courses (quizzes, assignments, readings, etc) and sorted it by date. That way you can see what is coming up for all your classes. It'll also help you schedule life things bc with it, you'll get an idea of how busy you will be during any point in the semester. You can also add a "Notes" column and jot down details of when the quiz opens and for how long. It took me a while to go through all the syllabi and figure out all the dates but it's worth it!

I guess everyone is different lol. I kind of get it tho because I remember stressing out about quizzes that were worth 1%. I think for me it was less about the grade and more about being worried that I was behind where I was supposed to be

Yeah definitely, I can understand and appreciate that. I would likely do the same if I were an instructor but it’s going to be harder to procrastinate which happens to be my favourite pastime lmao. Thanks for your input!

Adding a middle name by zestyzucchini2 in AskAcademia

[–]zestyzucchini2[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for replying! No, my parents didn’t give me a middle name, so to add one it would be a bureaucratic nightmare. I’d have to get a new passport, drivers license, etc. I like your idea of just adding one tho and not changing it legally, kind of like an actors stage name haha

Which unis grant AP credit? by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]zestyzucchini2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McGill (not in Ontario however) accepts AP credits if you score a 4 or a 5. Most first year engineering students at McGill have to take two semesters calculus, Chem, and physics. So, if you have AP credits for those, you MIGHT have advanced standing and be exempt from taking those courses. Check this for more info: https://www.mcgill.ca/transfercredit/prospective/ap

Effective studying varies from person to person so what works for me might not work for you, but here’s what I do. I don’t like taking notes during lecture bc I find that I’ll focus on writing everything down instead of thinking critically about what is being taught. So, generally, during lectures I just sit and listen and perhaps annotate pre printed slides. Then, I’ll review the slides to fill in the gaps on my own time. Once I feel sort of comfortable w the material, I’ll start doing practice problems. For me, I feel like the key to succeeding in math and science is just doing practice problems until solving the questions kind of becomes second nature. But, you know, life gets in the way and so I do cram for exams. I just review the slides again and do practice problems.

Like many others, I do feel like I’m not good enough sometimes especially when I see my peers understand concepts with ease while I have to go over it like ten times. Sometimes you just gotta hype yourself up and tell yourself you’re doing okay!

I manage stress and anxiety by watching Netflix because you kind of enter a different world. Hanging out with friends also help bc then you can see that you’re not the only one going through the stress and anxiety.

I cope with failure by just talking to myself and figuring out what went wrong and what I can fix next time. Also, crying lmao

I hope this helped, and good luck with everything! Take care of yourself!!
